Position Summary
The General Transportation Manager leads end-to-end transportation operations, ensuring fleet readiness, operational excellence, safety, and cost efficiency across the network. This role is responsible for driving asset optimization, leveraging data and digital tools, managing risk, and building strong vendor partnerships to deliver reliable, on-time performance that supports Walmart’s omnichannel business.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Operations & Network Execution
- Oversee inbound and outbound transportation operations, including routing, scheduling, and vehicle utilization
- Ensure seamless flow of goods across the network while meeting delivery timelines and regulatory requirements
- Analyze operational performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, service, and cost
- Support design and continuous improvement of the transportation network
Fleet & Asset Management
- Ensure fleet availability and readiness to meet business demand
- Lead preventative maintenance strategies and monitor carrier quality performance
- Develop and implement asset management strategies, including lifecycle planning and total cost of ownership
- Guide fleet mix decisions across owned, leased, and third-party capacity
- Enforce asset management standards, compliance, and best practices
Data & Digital Enablement
- Leverage data analytics, visualization tools, and emerging technologies to drive decision-making
- Partner with Data Science and Technology teams to build and implement advanced capabilities (AI, predictive analytics)
- Develop dashboards and insights to monitor KPIs and drive continuous improvement
- Promote data governance practices to ensure data quality and integrity
- Enable a data-driven culture across teams
Exception & Risk Management
- Lead strategies to minimize disruptions, reduce loss, and improve network resilience
- Manage escalations, crisis response, and operational disruptions
- Implement proactive risk mitigation and contingency planning
- Optimize processes through automation and improved workflows to reduce non-value-added time
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, EPA)
- Develop and execute safety programs, audits, and risk mitigation plans
- Serve as a key point of contact for regulatory agencies and internal audits
- Promote a safety-first culture and ensure adherence to company standards
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Drive process standardization aligned with Walmart’s “One Best Way” philosophy
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives and operational efficiencies
- Conduct root cause analysis and lead corrective action planning
- Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to improve workflows and performance
Vendor & Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with carriers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
- Lead supplier performance reviews and drive accountability for service and cost outcomes
- Identify strategic vendor opportunities and manage supplier risks
- Act as escalation point for major supplier issues
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop high-performing teams
- Drive talent strategy including hiring, succession planning, and capability development
- Foster associate engagement, inclusion, and a culture of continuous improvement
- Support programs that enhance associate wellbeing and engagement
Sustainability & Community Impact
- Champion sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible resource use
- Integrate environmental, social, and economic considerations into transportation operations
- Support community engagement and corporate responsibility initiatives

The annual salary range for this position is $158,400.00 - $237,600.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include:
- Regional Pay Zone (RPZ) (based on location)
- Stock
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in business or a related field; and 3 years experience in a senior management role within an operations/distribution/supply chain environment, supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors; managing workload; and participating in the hiring and promotion of employees facility-wide OR 1 year experience as a Walmart Supply Chain Assistant General Manager supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing associates; managing associate workload; and participating in the hiring and promotion of associates OR 3 years experience as a Walmart Supply Chain Operations Manager supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing associates; managing associate workload; and participating in the hiring and promotion of associates OR 5 years experience in a senior management role as an operations/distribution/logistics environment, supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors; managing workload; and participating in the hiring and promotion of employees facility-wide.
Preferred Qualifications
Both Bachelor's Degree in a related field (e.g., Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Financial Management, Production/Operations Management); and 4 years experience in a senior management role in an operations/distribution/logistics environment, supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing managers/supervisors; managing workload; and participating in the hiring and promotion of employees facility-wide. Experience developing and managing budgets, managing P&L, developing manpower forecasts, monitoring regulatory compliance, and analyzing financial/operational data.
