Which education employers in Iowa sponsor H-1B visas?
Iowa's major research universities are the most consistent H-1B sponsors in education. The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa regularly file petitions for faculty, researchers, and professional staff. Large public school districts such as Des Moines Public Schools and Iowa City Community School District also sponsor H-1B workers, particularly for hard-to-fill teaching and specialist positions.
Which cities in Iowa have the most education H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Iowa City and Ames have the highest concentration of education H-1B jobs, driven by the University of Iowa and Iowa State University respectively. Des Moines follows as the state's largest metro, where public school districts, community colleges, and education-adjacent nonprofit organizations generate additional openings. Cedar Falls, home to the University of Northern Iowa, is a smaller but consistent source of sponsored positions.
What types of education roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Iowa?
Roles that require a specific bachelor's degree or higher as a standard entry requirement are most likely to qualify as specialty occupations. In education, this commonly includes tenure-track and visiting faculty positions, postdoctoral researchers, instructional designers, curriculum developers, education data analysts, and student services professionals in areas like advising or international student affairs. K-12 positions with a defined subject-matter degree requirement can also qualify.
How do I find education H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers who need visa sponsorship, so you can filter directly by Iowa, the education industry, and H-1B sponsorship rather than sifting through listings that don't apply to you. Beyond Migrate Mate, monitoring university careers portals at Iowa State, University of Iowa, and UNI directly is worthwhile, as these institutions post sponsored roles frequently and include position details relevant to H-1B eligibility.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in education?
Iowa's education H-1B market is heavily anchored to its public university system, which means hiring cycles follow academic calendars. Most faculty and research positions open in the fall for the following academic year, so timing your search accordingly matters. Iowa's public universities are also cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions outside the annual lottery, which removes one significant barrier that exists with private-sector sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B education jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
