Which healthcare companies sponsor H-1B visas in Iowa?
The largest H-1B sponsors in Iowa's healthcare sector include University of Iowa Health Care, UnityPoint Health, MercyOne, and Iowa Clinic. Academic medical centers and large regional health systems file the most H-1B petitions, as they have dedicated HR and legal infrastructure to manage sponsorship. Smaller private practices and rural clinics sponsor far less frequently due to the administrative and legal costs involved.
Which cities in Iowa have the most healthcare H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Iowa City leads the state for healthcare H-1B activity, driven by University of Iowa Health Care and its affiliated research programs. Des Moines follows as Iowa's largest metro, home to UnityPoint Health, MercyOne Des Moines, and Iowa Clinic. Cedar Rapids is the third major concentration, with MercyOne Cedar Rapids and UnityPoint Health St. Luke's both operating large facilities that have historically filed H-1B petitions.
What types of healthcare roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Iowa?
Roles that regularly qualify include physicians in specialty and primary care, clinical researchers, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and medical scientists. The H-1B requires the position to be a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the duties. Registered nurses generally do not qualify under H-1B but may be eligible under other visa categories.
How do I find healthcare H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters healthcare H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa by role, city, and employer. Rather than sorting through general job boards that rarely indicate sponsorship availability, Migrate Mate surfaces positions where employers have a documented history of filing H-1B petitions in healthcare. Filtering by Iowa and the healthcare category gives you a targeted list of active openings from employers already familiar with the sponsorship process.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for healthcare H-1B sponsorship?
Iowa's healthcare workforce relies heavily on international professionals, particularly in rural and underserved areas, which means some employers have established sponsorship workflows. However, Iowa's rural hospitals often operate on tighter margins and may be less equipped to absorb H-1B filing costs compared to large academic systems. Positions tied to federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas can sometimes support additional visa pathways, so it's worth consulting an immigration attorney about all available options for your specific role.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B healthcare jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
