Which companies in Massachusetts most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for science and research roles?
Massachusetts has a high concentration of H-1B visa sponsors in science and research. Major sponsors include Biogen, Moderna, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Broad Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and Pfizer's Cambridge operations. Large academic medical centers like Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital also file H-1B petitions regularly for research scientists and postdoctoral researchers.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most science and research H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Cambridge and Boston account for the vast majority of science and research H-1B sponsorship activity in the state. The Kendall Square area of Cambridge is particularly dense, home to hundreds of biotech and life sciences employers. Worcester has a growing research presence anchored by UMass Chan Medical School, and Waltham hosts several pharmaceutical and biotech companies with active H-1B sponsorship histories.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Roles that typically qualify are those requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific discipline as a minimum requirement. Common qualifying titles include research scientist, computational biologist, bioinformatics analyst, chemist, materials scientist, epidemiologist, and clinical research associate. Postdoctoral researcher positions at universities and research hospitals also routinely receive H-1B sponsorship, particularly where the role requires a specialized doctoral-level background.
How do I find science & research H-1B sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters for employers with verified H-1B sponsorship history, including science and research roles in Massachusetts. Rather than sorting through general job boards, you can search directly by visa type, industry, and state. This is especially useful for identifying active sponsors in Cambridge and Boston's biotech corridor, where many postings don't explicitly state sponsorship availability.
Are there any Massachusetts-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in science and research?
Massachusetts has some of the highest concentrations of cap-exempt H-1B employers in the country. Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research affiliates like MIT Lincoln Laboratory can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap and lottery. This means researchers affiliated with these institutions may have access to H-1B sponsorship year-round, independent of the April lottery cycle that affects private-sector petitions.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B science & research jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
