Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in Massachusetts?
Suffolk Construction, Turner Construction, Skanska, Gilbane Building Company, and WSP USA are among the firms with documented H-1B filings in Massachusetts. These companies primarily sponsor engineers, project managers, and technical specialists rather than trades workers. Larger general contractors and engineering-focused construction firms are the most active sponsors, as their roles are more likely to satisfy the specialty occupation standard USCIS requires.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Boston accounts for the largest share of construction H-1B sponsorship activity in Massachusetts, driven by ongoing development in the Seaport District, Longwood Medical Area, and downtown. Cambridge sees demand tied to university and biotech campus construction. Worcester and Springfield have smaller but active markets connected to regional infrastructure and healthcare facility projects. Most sponsoring employers maintain offices in Greater Boston regardless of where individual projects are located.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in construction applies to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Structural engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, MEP engineers, construction project managers with engineering degrees, and building information modeling specialists are the most common qualifying roles. General site supervision, estimating, and skilled trades positions typically do not meet the specialty occupation threshold and are not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters construction roles in Massachusetts by H-1B sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers who have actually filed petitions rather than cold-applying broadly. Search by job title and location to surface civil engineering, structural engineering, and construction management openings with confirmed sponsorship activity. This significantly narrows the field compared to general job searching.
Are there any Massachusetts-specific considerations for H-1B construction jobs?
Massachusetts prevailing wage requirements under state public works law can affect how employers structure compensation for H-1B workers on public projects, since both federal LCA prevailing wage rules and state wage standards may apply simultaneously. Additionally, many large Boston-area construction projects involve public funding or institutional clients with procurement requirements that influence hiring timelines. Applicants should expect longer offer-to-start timelines on public sector or hospital construction projects.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
