Which education companies and institutions sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Michigan?
The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University are among the most active OPT sponsors in the state, frequently hiring international graduates for research, administrative, and instructional roles. Larger K-12 districts such as Detroit Public Schools Community District and Grand Rapids Public Schools also hire on OPT, particularly for STEM teaching and education technology positions.
Which cities in Michigan have the most education F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Ann Arbor leads the state given the University of Michigan's scale, with a high density of research and academic roles open to F-1 OPT candidates. East Lansing follows closely due to Michigan State University's hiring volume. Detroit has a growing number of opportunities through its public school system and nonprofit education organizations, while Grand Rapids and Lansing also have consistent openings in K-12 and higher education administration.
What types of education roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Michigan?
Roles that align directly with a STEM degree field have the broadest OPT eligibility, including education technology, data analysis in institutional research, curriculum development in STEM subjects, and educational psychology. Non-STEM OPT (12 months) can cover positions such as academic advising, program coordination, and instructional design when they match your declared major. Teaching assistant and research assistant roles at universities are among the most commonly approved positions.
How do I find education F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by visa type, including F-1 OPT, so you can browse education roles in Michigan without sifting through positions that don't support international candidates. Searching by state and industry on Migrate Mate lets you target universities, K-12 districts, and edtech employers in Michigan that have an active history of sponsoring F-1 OPT workers.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship in education?
Michigan's large public university system creates more OPT-friendly hiring than many states, since universities are experienced with international hiring compliance and often have dedicated international HR staff. For STEM OPT extensions, your role must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program list and your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, which most Michigan public institutions already are. Private K-12 schools and smaller nonprofits may have less experience with OPT paperwork, so confirming E-Verify enrollment early in the process is important.
