Which accounting companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Ohio?
The Big Four firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG) have offices in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati and have historically hired F-1 OPT candidates in accounting roles. Regional firms such as Plante Moran, Clark Schaefer Hackett, and Crowe also operate extensively in Ohio and have track records of employing international graduates. Large corporations headquartered in the state, including Nationwide Insurance and Progressive, maintain internal accounting teams that may consider OPT candidates as well.
Which cities in Ohio have the most accounting F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Columbus is Ohio's largest accounting job market, driven by its concentration of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, and proximity to Ohio State University. Cleveland follows closely, with a strong presence of regional accounting firms and healthcare-sector finance roles. Cincinnati rounds out the top three, supported by its manufacturing and consumer goods industries. Smaller markets like Dayton and Toledo have fewer openings but still host regional firm offices worth targeting.
What types of accounting roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that typically fall within F-1 OPT-eligible accounting work include staff accountant, audit associate, tax associate, financial analyst, and forensic accounting positions. These roles directly relate to accounting, finance, or business degree programs, which satisfies the OPT requirement that employment be directly related to your field of study. Roles in management consulting or financial advisory may also qualify if the duties involve substantial accounting-related work aligned with your degree.
How do I find accounting F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by visa type, including F-1 OPT, so you can browse accounting roles in Ohio without sifting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Beyond using Migrate Mate, attending Ohio CPA Society events and recruiting sessions at Ohio State, Case Western Reserve, and University of Cincinnati can connect you directly with employers who have experience hiring OPT candidates in accounting.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for F-1 OPT accounting jobs?
Ohio has no state-level restrictions on hiring F-1 OPT candidates, so the primary considerations are federal ones: your OPT authorization must be active, employment must be at least 20 hours per week, and the role must relate directly to your degree. Ohio's accounting sector is heavily influenced by CPA licensure requirements, and some employers prefer or require candidates to be on a path toward CPA certification, so having passed sections of the CPA exam can strengthen your candidacy even while on OPT.
