Assistant Professor Jobs in South Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant professor in South Carolina?
Becoming an assistant professor in South Carolina requires earning a terminal degree in your discipline, most often a PhD, MFA, or equivalent professional doctorate. Most four-year institutions expect a completed dissertation and a record of scholarly or creative work before hiring. Technical colleges affiliated with the South Carolina Technical College System may accept a master's degree plus professional experience for career and technical education faculty. Demonstrating teaching effectiveness through a teaching portfolio or sample syllabi strengthens applications at both research and teaching-focused institutions.
Which companies hire assistant professors in South Carolina?
Employers hiring assistant professors in South Carolina right now include University of South Carolina, Claflin University, and State of South Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Carolina's large public university systems and the Medical University of South Carolina consistently post the highest volume of faculty openings across disciplines.
Which South Carolina cities have the most assistant professor jobs?
Richland, Orangeburg, and Richland County are the South Carolina cities with the most assistant professor openings. Columbia leads because it is home to the University of South Carolina's main campus and several smaller colleges, while Clemson and Greenville draw candidates to Clemson University and its growing health sciences programs, and Charleston attracts applicants through the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston.
Are there remote assistant professor jobs in South Carolina?
Yes, but they are limited. About 0% of assistant professor openings tied to South Carolina are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the fact that most faculty roles require in-person teaching, lab instruction, and on-campus advising. The positions most likely to carry a remote or hybrid component are online program faculty roles, particularly in business, education, and certain graduate-level courses offered through South Carolina institutions with established distance-learning programs.
How can I get hired as a assistant professor in South Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a postdoctoral fellowship or visiting instructor appointment, which many South Carolina research universities use to develop early-career faculty. The University of South Carolina and Clemson University both hire visiting and adjunct instructors who later compete for tenure-track lines. Candidates from adjacent roles such as clinical educator, industry researcher, or academic administrator can also transition effectively. Building a teaching portfolio and presenting at regional conferences strengthens applications at South Carolina's many liberal arts and technical colleges that value demonstrated classroom readiness over an extensive publication record.
Where can I find and apply to assistant professor jobs in South Carolina?
You can find and apply to assistant professor jobs in South Carolina on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from institutions across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your discipline and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
