Job Description
Business Development is a critical pillar of AbbVie’s future growth, and Global Business Development Forecasting helps determine which external opportunities can create the greatest long-term value. The team brings commercial insight, analytical rigor, and strategic clarity to high-stakes BD decisions by translating science, market dynamics, competitive context, and uncertainty into actionable forecasts.
The Associate Director plays a high-impact and highly visible role in this process, leading forecasts and commercial perspectives that shape executive understanding of opportunity value, risk, and strategic fit. Working across R&D, Commercial, Pipeline Commercial Strategy, CBSO, BD Finance, and other partners, this role sits at the intersection of scientific innovation and commercial strategy and directly supports decisions that influence AbbVie’s future portfolio.
Success requires strong forecasting and commercial analytics expertise, rigorous assumption development, clear executive communication, and the ability to influence across a matrixed organization. Candidates should be curious, collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create structure in fast-moving situations. For the right candidate, the role offers meaningful growth through exposure to senior leaders, enterprise-wide relationships, and deeper understanding of both R&D and Commercial strategy.
This role reports to the Director, Global Business Development Forecasting.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial forecasting, market assessments, scenario analyses, and commercial P&Ls for BD opportunities, balancing analytical rigor with timely decision support in a fast-paced environment.
- Develop patient-based forecast models, pressure-test assumptions, and apply primary research, secondary data, epidemiology, competitive intelligence, market access input, and expert perspectives to build a well-supported commercial view.
- Partner broadly across BD, PCS, finance, market access, epidemiology, marketing analytics, and senior leadership to align assumptions, clarify risks and opportunities, and ensure commercial perspectives are reflected in deal valuation and governance discussions.
- Translate complex analyses into clear recommendations, executive-ready narratives, and decision options for senior leaders and governance forums, facilitating productive discussion around uncertainty, trade-offs, and strategic implications.
- Advance BD forecasting capabilities by sharing best practices, improving tools and processes, and helping create faster, more consistent, and audit-ready ways of working.
Qualifications
- Education and experience: 7+ years of relevant forecasting, market analytics, finance, or life sciences consulting experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industries; MBA or other advanced degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or business required.
- Forecasting and analytics skills: Experience building forecast models in Excel and forecasting platforms such as IQVIA Forecast Horizon; ability to develop and/or utilize patient-flow modeling approaches, craft robust assumptions, and prepare evidence-based forecast inputs from epidemiology, secondary data, market research, treatment dynamics, competitive profiles, and expert input. Familiar with key data sources used to substantiate forecast recommendations and demonstrated ability to clearly document forecast assumption logic and rationale. Familiarity with using and crafting Target Product Profiles (TPPs), establishing and aligning analytical business rules and market definitions, and leveraging claims data analytics is also highly desirable.
- Business and therapeutic area knowledge: Experience supporting strategic decision making in specialized therapeutic areas such as Neuroscience, Immunology, Oncology, or other complex markets is preferred; ability to apply data, assumptions, and market context effectively is critical.
- Communication and influence: Strong executive communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages by audience, translate complex quantitative analyses into recommendations and decision options, and influence stakeholders across functions and cultures without direct authority.
- Project leadership: Strong project management skills in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with the ability to prioritize multiple workstreams, communicate trade-offs, escalate risks appropriately, and deliver high-quality work under time pressure.

Align your credentials to AbbVie's therapeutic focus
AbbVie's BD roles center on immunology, oncology, and aesthetics. Frame your degree and experience around drug licensing, co-promotion structures, or asset evaluation in those areas before you apply, since H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct field-to-role connection.
Target AbbVie's external innovation and licensing teams
AbbVie structures BD around external innovation hubs that evaluate early-stage biotech partnerships. Search their open roles for titles referencing licensing, alliance management, or business development to find the postings most likely to support visa sponsorship from day one.
Use Migrate Mate to filter AbbVie BD openings by visa type
Not every AbbVie BD posting specifies sponsorship eligibility upfront. Use Migrate Mate to filter active Business Development Manager roles at AbbVie by the visa categories they sponsor, so you spend time only on positions where you're a viable candidate.
Clarify sponsorship before your final interview round
Raise your visa needs with AbbVie's recruiter before the offer stage, not after. For E-3 or TN candidates, turnaround is faster, but H-1B hires need to factor in the October 1 cap-subject start date, which affects how AbbVie structures your onboarding timeline.
Prepare a thorough LCA-ready employment history
AbbVie's HR team files your Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS receives the H-1B petition. Have a complete, verified employment history with exact dates and job titles ready, since gaps or inconsistencies can slow LCA certification and delay your start date.
Document cross-functional pharma deal experience explicitly
USCIS scrutinizes BD roles because job duties can look generalized. Build a detailed record of transactions you've contributed to, including term sheet negotiations, due diligence processes, or cross-border licensing agreements, to support the specialty occupation argument in your petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Business Development Managers?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development Manager roles. Because these positions require specialized knowledge in areas like drug licensing, asset valuation, or therapeutic area strategy, they typically meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies to H-1B petitions. If you're cap-subject, your employment would need to start no earlier than October 1 following the lottery selection in March.
How do I apply for Business Development Manager jobs at AbbVie?
Apply directly through AbbVie's careers portal at abbvie.com/careers. Search for Business Development Manager roles and filter by location or therapeutic area. You can also browse AbbVie's current openings on Migrate Mate, which lets you filter specifically for roles that sponsor the visa type you need, saving time if sponsorship eligibility is a deciding factor for you.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly sponsor for Business Development Manager roles?
AbbVie sponsors a broad range of visa categories for this function, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. F-1 OPT and CPT candidates may also be considered, particularly for roles that transition into full-time BD positions after a structured program.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Business Development Manager candidates requiring sponsorship?
AbbVie typically looks for a graduate-level degree in life sciences, pharmacy, or business, combined with hands-on experience in pharmaceutical licensing, due diligence, or alliance management. For sponsored candidates, the degree-to-role alignment matters both for internal hiring standards and for satisfying USCIS specialty occupation requirements. Demonstrated experience evaluating biotech assets or structuring commercial agreements strengthens both your application and the sponsorship petition.
How do I plan my timeline if AbbVie offers me a Business Development Manager role on H-1B?
If you're cap-subject, the H-1B lottery opens in March with a potential October 1 start. AbbVie will need to submit your registration before that window closes. From offer to cleared-to-start, budget at least six to eight months for a cap-subject hire. Cap-exempt scenarios, such as a transfer from a university or nonprofit, move faster. Confirm your current status with AbbVie's immigration team early so they can plan the filing sequence accurately.
