Overview
Intuit's Traffic Team sits at the center of every request that moves through Intuit's digital ecosystem. The team owns a custom-built API Gateway that handles all North-South traffic across Intuit's products, and a Service Mesh that governs East-West traffic between internal services. As a central platform team, the reliability, security, and performance of this team's systems have a direct and immediate blast radius across every consumer-facing and internal Intuit service — an outage or regression here does not stay contained to one product, it cascades.
We are hiring a Staff Engineer to provide technical leadership across this platform, with particular focus on two of the team's highest-leverage, fastest-moving initiatives: the MCP Gateway (the transitional and target-state authentication and routing layer that lets AI agents such as Claude securely interact with Intuit services) and the broader shift toward AI-agent-driven traffic operations — including agent-assisted troubleshooting, config impact analysis, and automated service onboarding. This role requires someone equally comfortable operating at the depth of Envoy/Istio internals and at the altitude of a multi-quarter platform roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical leader for the Traffic platform, setting architecture and engineering direction across API Gateway, Service Mesh, and MCP Gateway with a systems-wide view of how they interact.
- Drive the technical design and hardening of the MCP Gateway, including authentication flows for AI agent clients, performance and security readiness, and the path from transitional to target-state architecture.
- Lead or heavily influence AI-agent-enabled traffic operations work — agent-driven troubleshooting, automated config impact analysis, and service onboarding — as part of the team's recurring delivery cadence.
- Own or co-own major migrations (e.g., Envoy adoption, Java-to-Go transitions, ICGW/3X consolidation) end-to-end, from design through rollout, with explicit attention to backward compatibility and blast-radius containment given the platform's central role.
- Apply and evolve resiliency practices — FMEA, Game Day exercises, load shedding — to reduce the frequency and severity of P1/P2 incidents on shared infrastructure.
- Act as a technical escalation point during high-severity incidents affecting gateway or mesh traffic, driving root-cause analysis and durable fixes (not just mitigation).
- Partner cross-functionally with adjacent Principal Engineers and engineering managers across Gateway, Mesh, MCP/3X, and Resiliency to align technical strategy across the org.
- Mentor senior and staff-track engineers, and raise the technical bar across the team through design reviews, and hands-on pairing on the hardest problems.
- Contribute to FY roadmap planning, providing grounded technical input on scope, sequencing, and risk trade-offs (e.g., what is realistic to land in a given quarter given platform constraints).
Qualifications
Required:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time operating large-scale, low-latency distributed systems in production.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Envoy and/or Istio, or equivalent experience with modern service mesh and API gateway architectures (xDS APIs, sidecar/ambient models, traffic routing and policy enforcement).
- Strong systems-level programming ability in Go and/or Java, with experience migrating or operating hybrid-language platforms at scale.
- Demonstrated experience designing authentication/authorization systems for high-throughput, security-sensitive traffic — bonus for experience with agent-to-service or machine-to-machine auth patterns (OAuth, mTLS, token exchange).
- Track record of leading incident response and root-cause analysis for P1-level production issues on infrastructure with broad organizational impact.
- Experience with AWS networking and infrastructure (VPC, NAT/TGW, load balancing) and cost/performance trade-offs at scale.
- Proven ability to operate as a technical leader without direct reports — influencing through design docs, architecture reviews, and cross-team alignment rather than authority.
Preferred:
- Direct experience building or operating infrastructure for AI agent traffic — MCP (Model Context Protocol), LLM gateway patterns, or similar emerging agent-to-service protocols.
- Experience with eBPF-based traffic capture or observability tooling.
- Familiarity with WASM or Go-based Envoy extension development.
- Background in FMEA methodology, chaos engineering, or Game Day-style resiliency practices.
- Experience operating within a platform team whose systems sit on the critical path for many downstream teams, with the discipline that entails (rigorous rollout gating, backward compatibility, staged enforcement).

Align your experience to Intuit's platform engineering scope
Staff Engineer roles at Intuit are defined by cross-team technical influence, not just individual coding output. Frame your resume around system design decisions, org-wide technical standards you've set, and scaled infrastructure work rather than feature delivery.
Verify your visa category before applying
Intuit sponsors several visa categories for Staff Engineers, including H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT. Confirm your specific category is covered before your interview loop, so you're not caught off guard at the offer stage when HR initiates the sponsorship review.
Front-load technical documentation for your specialty occupation case
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation arguments for senior engineering titles. Gather evidence now: transcripts, patents, publications, or architectural design documents that connect your advanced degree directly to the Staff Engineer scope Intuit advertises.
Target Intuit's fintech product teams when searching roles
Staff Engineer headcount at Intuit clusters around TurboTax, QuickBooks, and their AI and data platform teams. Filtering your search to these domains puts you in front of hiring managers who regularly work with sponsored candidates and understand the timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Staff Engineer roles at Intuit
Searching broadly across job boards buries sponsorship-friendly listings. Migrate Mate filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers, so you can find current Staff Engineer openings at Intuit without manually screening hundreds of postings for sponsorship eligibility.
Negotiate your start date around H-1B cap timelines
If you need a new H-1B and your current status doesn't support cap-exempt filing, the April lottery and October 1 start date create a firm constraint. Build this into offer negotiations early so Intuit's recruiting team can structure the timeline around USCIS deadlines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Intuit sponsor H-1B visas for Staff Engineers?
Yes, Intuit sponsors H-1B visas for Staff Engineer roles. Because the title sits at a senior individual contributor level, the company treats it as a specialty occupation requiring advanced technical expertise, which supports a strong H-1B petition. If you're subject to the annual cap, Intuit's HR team will walk you through the April registration window and the October 1 start date that follows a successful selection.
Which visa types does Intuit commonly sponsor for Staff Engineer roles?
Intuit sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, EB-2, EB-3, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas for engineering roles including Staff Engineer positions. Australian citizens are well-served by the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is often faster to process. Canadian and Mexican nationals frequently use TN visa status given the streamlined USMCA process. If you're already on OPT or CPT, Intuit can typically begin sponsorship proceedings before your authorized period ends.
What qualifications does Intuit expect for Staff Engineer candidates?
Intuit looks for Staff Engineers who can operate across organizational boundaries, not just within a single team. In practice that means a track record of defining technical direction, driving architecture decisions at scale, and influencing engineering practices across product areas. A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a closely related field is standard. Depth in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or data platforms aligns well with Intuit's fintech stack across TurboTax, QuickBooks, and Credit Karma.
How do I apply for Staff Engineer jobs at Intuit?
You can find open Staff Engineer positions through Intuit's careers site or through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles at visa-sponsoring employers so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying. When you apply, tailor your materials to highlight system-scale technical leadership, not just coding contributions. Intuit's engineering interview process typically includes a technical screen, a system design round, and a cross-functional leadership assessment, so prepare for all three.
How do I time my job search at Intuit around visa filing deadlines?
Timing depends on your current status. If you need a cap-subject H-1B, Intuit must register you in the USCIS lottery in March for an October 1 start, which means your offer and documentation need to be in order by late February. If you're on OPT with a STEM extension, you have more runway. E-3 and TN candidates have more flexible timelines because those categories don't have a cap or lottery. Build backward from your current authorization expiration date to identify when you need an offer in hand.
