Tailor your portfolio to scientific software
Thermo Fisher's product engineering roles often involve instrument control systems, lab data pipelines, or regulated software environments. Highlight any experience with embedded software, scientific data formats, or FDA-regulated product development to stand out during resume screening.
Identify roles labeled product versus platform
Thermo Fisher distinguishes between product-facing and internal platform engineering. Product Software Engineer postings are tied to specific instrument or software product lines. Target job IDs that reference specific divisions like Life Sciences or Analytical Instruments for the strongest sponsorship alignment.
Confirm OPT eligibility before your first interview
Thermo Fisher participates in E-Verify, which is required to authorize F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extensions. Verify your authorization documents are current before your first interview so onboarding can proceed without delays once an offer is extended.
Ask specifically about H-1B cap-exempt pathways
Thermo Fisher is a for-profit employer, so H-1B petitions go through the USCIS annual lottery. If you missed the current lottery cycle, ask your recruiter about starting employment on OPT and filing in the next registration window to avoid a gap.
Browse open roles on Migrate Mate before applying directly
Use Migrate Mate to filter Product Software Engineer openings at Thermo Fisher by visa type so you only apply to roles actively compatible with your sponsorship situation. Applying without that filter wastes time on positions outside your eligibility.
Prepare for PERM timing when negotiating your start date
If you're targeting a Green Card through the EB-2 or EB-3 pathway, PERM labor certification with DOL typically begins after one to two years of employment. Negotiate a start date that gives you enough runway before your OPT or H-1B status requires action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers?
Yes, Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers. The company is a for-profit employer, so petitions are subject to the USCIS annual H-1B cap and lottery. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, the typical path is to begin employment under OPT authorization while your employer files an H-1B visa petition during the next registration period, which opens each March.
How do I apply for Product Software Engineer jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Apply directly through Thermo Fisher's careers portal or browse open roles filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate. Focus on postings tied to specific product lines or divisions, since those teams have the clearest headcount and sponsorship intent. Have your resume ready to emphasize software work in scientific, regulated, or instrumentation-related environments, as those map directly to Thermo Fisher's product engineering stack.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Product Software Engineer roles?
Thermo Fisher supports several visa categories for Product Software Engineers, including H-1B, F-1 OPT and STEM OPT, F-1 CPT for internship roles, and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying software roles. For longer-term permanent residency, the company also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions, typically initiated after an employee has established tenure in a qualifying role.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for Product Software Engineer roles?
Most Product Software Engineer roles at Thermo Fisher require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Experience with full-stack development, embedded systems, or scientific software platforms is frequently listed. Roles tied to regulated products may also expect familiarity with software development lifecycle practices aligned to FDA or IEC standards, which is less common in purely commercial software environments.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Product Software Engineer at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Timeline depends on your visa category. F-1 OPT authorization through your university DSO typically takes two to three months before your start date. H-1B sponsorship follows USCIS registration each March, with employment starting October 1 if selected. Green Card sponsorship through PERM involves DOL labor certification, which can take one to two years before an I-140 petition is filed, depending on the backlog in your priority date category.
