Marketing Communications Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a marketing communications manager in California?
Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or public relations as the baseline qualification. There is no state-issued license required to work as a marketing communications manager in California. From there, the typical path runs through coordinator or specialist roles at agencies or in-house teams, building a portfolio of campaigns across digital, content, and media channels before stepping into a manager position overseeing strategy or a communications function.
How much do marketing communications managers make in California?
Marketing communications managers in California earn a median of about $193,620 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $104,370 for the lowest 10% to over $326,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire marketing communications managers in California?
Employers hiring marketing communications managers in California right now include Apple, TikTok, and NVIDIA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, entertainment studios, and major health systems means demand is spread across several distinct industries rather than clustering in a single sector.
Which California cities have the most marketing communications manager jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose account for the most marketing communications manager openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through entertainment, consumer brands, and media companies, San Francisco and the broader Bay Area reflect demand from technology and venture-backed firms, and San Diego pulls from its life sciences and defense sectors, meaning each city's openings tend to reflect the dominant industry anchored there.
Are there remote marketing communications manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields, because the work centers on writing, strategy, and digital platforms that translate well to distributed teams. About 25% of marketing communications manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly the role has shifted since in-person requirements loosened. Campaign strategy, content development, and digital channel management tend to be the functions most consistently offered with location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a marketing communications manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a marketing coordinator or communications specialist role at a California agency, consumer brand, or technology company, where you build a portfolio managing content calendars, drafting press materials, and supporting campaign execution. Large California employers in healthcare and technology, including health systems and enterprise software firms, run associate communications programs and rotate new-career hires through brand and content teams. A strong writing portfolio and familiarity with a marketing automation platform give candidates without experience a concrete edge over those who rely on a degree alone.
Where can I find and apply to marketing communications manager jobs in California?
