New York does not require a state-issued license for this role, but earning a PHR through HRCI or a SHRM-CP through SHRM strengthens applications considerably. Candidates with experience using enterprise HRIS platforms and familiarity with New York State labor law, including paid family leave and wage theft regulations, are consistently preferred by New York employers.
How much do people operations specialists make in New York?
People operations specialists in New York earn a median of about $84,380 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $56,040 for the lowest 10% to over $149,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire people operations specialists in New York?
Employers hiring people operations specialists in New York right now include Columbia University, Upstate Cerebral Palsy, and YAI - Seeing Beyond Disability, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial services firms, major hospital systems, and global media companies means demand for people operations professionals is spread across a wide range of industries rather than clustered in any single sector.
Which New York cities have the most people operations specialist jobs?
The cities with the most people operations specialist openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Buffalo. New York City dominates the distribution given its density of corporate headquarters, financial institutions, and large healthcare networks, while Albany's concentration of state government agencies and Buffalo's growing healthcare and manufacturing base generate steady demand outside the metro.
Are there remote people operations specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and they're fairly common, since people operations work is largely desk-based and system-driven. About 17% of people operations specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role centers on HRIS administration, policy work, and employee communications. Tasks that require in-person presence, such as onboarding sessions and employee relations meetings, tend to anchor hybrid schedules rather than fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a people operations specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for HR coordinator or people operations associate roles, which large New York employers like hospital systems and financial firms post regularly for candidates without deep experience. Earning a SHRM-CP or completing a HRCI-accredited certificate program signals commitment and compensates for limited tenure. Adjacent roles in office administration, payroll support, or recruiting coordination at New York companies frequently transition into people operations positions as candidates build HRIS exposure and employment law familiarity.
