Tips for Your People Operations Specialist Job Search
Tailor your resume to HRIS tools
People ops roles almost always screen for specific platforms like Workday, BambooHR, or Rippling. Name the systems you've actually used in your bullets, not just in a skills list, and note the context, such as running open enrollment or building workflows.
Highlight cross-functional projects you owned
Hiring managers want evidence you've coordinated across departments, not just supported HR. Call out projects where you partnered with finance, legal, or engineering, and name the outcome, whether that's a policy rollout, a benefits overhaul, or a headcount audit.
Filter openings by company growth stage
The day-to-day work differs sharply between a 50-person startup and a 5,000-person enterprise. Startups typically want generalists who can build programs from scratch, while larger companies hire for process management within existing infrastructure. Match your experience to the stage.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists people operations specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a process improvement example
Interviewers consistently ask people ops candidates to walk through a time they improved an HR process. Before your interview, prepare one concrete example with a clear before-and-after, covering what you changed, how you got buy-in, and what the result was.
Negotiate scope, not just compensation
People ops roles vary widely in ownership, from purely administrative to full program ownership. During offer conversations, clarify which HR functions you'll own outright versus support, because that scope difference compounds quickly into career trajectory and learning opportunities.
People Operations Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most people operations specialists?
The companies hiring the most people operations specialists right now include Target, Spectrum, and Marriott International, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is strongest at high-growth tech companies and healthcare systems that are scaling headcount rapidly.
How many people operations specialist jobs are remote?
About 43% of people operations specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, making this one of the more flexible HR roles to find off-site. Employee experience, HRIS administration, and onboarding coordination tend to have the highest share of remote and hybrid arrangements compared to roles with heavy in-person compliance or facilities responsibilities.
How do you become a people operations specialist?
Most people operations specialists start with a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or psychology, then build hands-on experience in an HR coordinator or generalist role. From there, gaining proficiency in at least one major HRIS platform, learning the basics of employment law and benefits administration, and earning a SHRM-CP or PHR certification will move your candidacy to the top of most employer lists.
Can you get hired as a people operations specialist without much experience?
Yes, entry-level people operations specialist roles do exist, particularly at startups and mid-size companies that need someone to own HR administration without a large team structure. The strongest candidates with limited experience emphasize internships or part-time HR work, demonstrate familiarity with a common HRIS tool, and show they've handled confidential employee information responsibly in any prior role.
What does the people operations specialist interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screen focused on your HR background and tool experience, followed by a hiring manager interview covering how you've handled specific HR scenarios such as an offboarding, a policy rollout, or a compliance issue. Many employers add a practical exercise, such as drafting an HR communication or walking through how you'd set up an onboarding workflow, before a final panel or offer stage.
Where can I find and apply to people operations specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to people operations specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Find roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
