Sales Engineering Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sales engineering manager in Virginia?
Most Virginia employers expect candidates to have a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related technical field, combined with several years working as a sales engineer before moving into management. Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as a sales engineering manager. In practice, hiring managers in Northern Virginia's federal IT and cybersecurity market place significant weight on relevant industry certifications and demonstrated experience leading pre-sales teams.
How much do sales engineering managers make in Virginia?
Sales engineering managers in Virginia earn a median of about $191,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $94,710 for the lowest 10% to over $302,900 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sales engineering managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring sales engineering managers in Virginia right now include ALEUT FEDERAL, HII, and Hoffman & Hoffman, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal IT integrators, and enterprise technology firms means demand is especially consistent for candidates with experience in government-facing or cloud-based solutions.
Which Virginia cities have the most sales engineering manager jobs?
The cities with the most sales engineering manager openings in Virginia are Arlington, Richmond, and Newport News. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology companies headquartered along the Dulles Technology Corridor, while Richmond and Hampton Roads contribute openings tied to regional enterprise software, utilities, and government services employers.
Are there remote sales engineering manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, though they are less common than fully on-site roles because managing a sales engineering team typically involves in-person client meetings, live product demonstrations, and team coaching. About 88% of sales engineering manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid arrangements more prevalent than fully remote. The parts of the role most likely to stay remote are internal team meetings, proposal reviews, and training cycles.
How can I get hired as a sales engineering manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is building a record as a high-performing individual sales engineer first, then pursuing a team lead or principal sales engineer role before applying for manager positions. Large Northern Virginia employers like Leidos and SAIC regularly hire associate or junior sales engineers into structured programs where promotion to management is a defined track. Earning a recognized cloud or cybersecurity certification strengthens a candidacy significantly, as does lateral movement from a solutions architect or technical account manager role into pre-sales leadership.
Where can I find and apply to sales engineering manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to sales engineering manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to each employer.
