Staff Accountant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff accountant in Virginia?
Most Virginia employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field as the baseline for staff accountant roles. While a state license is not required to work as a staff accountant, many employers prefer candidates who are actively pursuing CPA licensure through the Virginia Board of Accountancy, which oversees CPA examination eligibility and licensure in the state. Gaining experience in government contract accounting strengthens your profile in Virginia's competitive market.
Which companies hire staff accountants in Virginia?
Virginia staff accountant roles are posted by Jobot, SABG, and Sikich and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, large health systems, and financial services firms means demand is distributed broadly from Northern Virginia through the Richmond corridor.
Which Virginia cities have the most staff accountant jobs?
Fairfax, Richmond, and McLean have the most staff accountant openings in Virginia right now. Northern Virginia leads because of the dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and Fortune 500 headquarters in the area, while Richmond draws demand from its concentration of financial institutions, law firms, and state government agencies, and Norfolk reflects the hiring activity tied to the region's large naval and healthcare employers.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields, since staff accountant work centers on financial systems, spreadsheets, and reporting that translate well to remote environments. About 50% of staff accountant openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader trends in finance and accounting. Month-end close support, accounts payable, and financial reporting roles are the most likely to offer fully remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a staff accountant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounting associate or junior accountant role with a Virginia government contractor or large health system, where structured onboarding is common for new graduates. Employers like Booz Allen Hamilton and Inova Health System regularly bring on candidates with a fresh accounting degree and no prior full-time experience. Completing coursework that qualifies you to sit for the CPA exam through the Virginia Board of Accountancy gives you a measurable edge, and internships in government contract accounting are among the most direct routes into full-time staff accountant work in the state.
Where can I find and apply to staff accountant jobs in Virginia?
