Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in Illinois?
Large general contractors and engineering firms with a significant Illinois presence, including Clayco, Turner Construction, Skanska, and AECOM, have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for construction-related roles. Infrastructure-focused firms working on Illinois DOT and Chicago Transit Authority projects also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data. Sponsorship activity tends to concentrate among firms large enough to maintain in-house immigration support.
Which cities in Illinois have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of construction H-1B sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by its dense concentration of commercial development, transit expansion, and corporate headquarters for major contractors. Rockford, Peoria, and the broader Metro East region near St. Louis see more limited but ongoing activity, primarily tied to infrastructure and public works projects rather than commercial construction.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in construction is generally limited to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Civil engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, construction project managers with engineering degrees, and building information modeling (BIM) specialists are among the positions that commonly meet the specialty occupation standard. General site supervision, labor, and trades roles typically do not qualify.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship type and industry, making it straightforward to browse construction roles in Illinois where employers have indicated H-1B sponsorship. Rather than sorting through general job boards and guessing at sponsorship availability, Migrate Mate surfaces verified H-1B opportunities in construction so you can focus your search on firms already open to sponsoring international candidates in Illinois.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for H-1B construction jobs?
Illinois requires licensed professional engineers (PEs) for certain construction and infrastructure roles, which adds a credentialing step beyond H-1B approval. International candidates may need to evaluate their path to Illinois PE licensure, which involves education verification and examination requirements. Projects tied to Illinois public funding may also carry additional compliance layers for employers, which can influence how firms approach sponsorship for those specific roles.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
