Which energy companies in Illinois sponsor H-1B visas?
Exelon and its subsidiary ComEd are among the most active H-1B sponsors in Illinois's energy sector, with consistent filings for engineering and technical roles. Invenergy, a Chicago-based renewable energy developer, also has a track record of sponsoring international workers. Beyond those, mid-sized utilities, energy trading firms, and engineering consultancies operating in the Chicago metro area regularly file H-1B petitions for specialized positions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most energy H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its surrounding suburbs account for the vast majority of energy H-1B sponsorship activity in Illinois. The Chicago metro is home to Exelon's headquarters, Invenergy's offices, and a concentration of energy consulting and trading firms. Rockford and Peoria see some demand tied to industrial energy roles, but for H-1B sponsored positions specifically, the Chicago metropolitan area is by far the strongest market in the state.
What types of energy roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Illinois?
H-1B eligibility requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it typically demands at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. In Illinois's energy sector, roles that commonly meet this standard include electrical engineers, power systems engineers, energy analysts, environmental engineers, and software engineers working on grid or energy management systems. Project development and energy trading roles with quantitative or engineering requirements also frequently qualify.
How do I find energy H-1B sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters energy H-1B sponsorship jobs in Illinois by visa type and industry, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. The platform surfaces roles from companies with documented H-1B filing histories in the energy sector, covering positions across Chicago and the broader Illinois market. Searching by state and industry on Migrate Mate is one of the most direct ways to identify relevant openings.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for energy H-1B workers?
Illinois's clean energy transition, driven by the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act passed in 2021, has expanded hiring in renewable energy development, grid modernization, and clean technology roles statewide. This policy direction has increased the volume of specialized positions that support H-1B sponsorship. Illinois also has no state income tax reciprocity complications specific to H-1B workers, and Chicago's status as a major corporate hub means immigration legal support resources are widely available.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B energy jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
