Which education employers in Vermont sponsor H-1B visas?
The University of Vermont is the largest education H-1B visa sponsor in the state, with a consistent record of petitions for research, faculty, and professional staff roles. Middlebury College, Norwich University, Champlain College, and Vermont State University also appear in federal LCA disclosure data as H-1B sponsors. Smaller K-12 districts sponsor less frequently and typically only for hard-to-fill specialist positions.
Which cities in Vermont have the most education H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Burlington is the dominant market, driven primarily by the University of Vermont and its affiliated research programs. Middlebury comes second due to Middlebury College's international faculty hiring. Northfield, home to Norwich University, also generates H-1B activity. Outside these three cities, education H-1B opportunities are sparse, as Vermont's population is small and most institutions are concentrated in these areas.
What types of education roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Vermont?
Roles that qualify for H-1B sponsorship in education generally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific academic field as a minimum entry requirement. At Vermont institutions, this commonly includes tenure-track and visiting faculty positions, postdoctoral research appointments, instructional designers, academic data analysts, and specialized student services roles such as international student advisors. General administrative or paraprofessional roles typically do not meet the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find education H-1B sponsorship jobs in Vermont?
Migrate Mate lists education jobs in Vermont that include H-1B visa sponsorship, letting you filter by state and visa type so you're not sifting through roles that don't sponsor. Beyond the job board, it helps to monitor hiring pages directly at the University of Vermont and Middlebury College, which post H-1B-eligible faculty and research openings regularly. Vermont's education market is small, so setting up alerts for new postings is practical given the limited volume.
Are there any Vermont-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in education?
Vermont's education sector skews heavily toward higher education rather than K-12, which matters because universities have more established H-1B sponsorship infrastructure and legal resources than school districts. The University of Vermont holds cap-exempt status as a qualifying nonprofit research institution, meaning it can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. Smaller colleges may also qualify for cap exemption, but this depends on their specific nonprofit and research activity designations, which vary by institution.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B education jobs in Vermont?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
