Chef Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chef in Alabama?
Alabama does not require a state-issued chef license, but all food handlers must obtain a Food Handler Certificate recognized by the Alabama Department of Public Health, and establishments require at least one Certified Food Protection Manager on staff. Most candidates complete a culinary arts program at schools such as Jefferson State Community College or Bishop State Community College, then advance through kitchen roles from prep cook to sous chef before reaching a lead or executive position.
Which companies hire chefs in Alabama?
Companies currently hiring chefs in Alabama include Food City, Ascent Hospitality Management, and Greek House Chefs, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's strong hospitality corridor along the Gulf Coast and its growing urban dining scenes in Birmingham and Huntsville mean hotel groups, resort properties, and multi-unit restaurant operators are among the most active employers.
Which Alabama cities have the most chef jobs?
Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville account for the greatest concentration of chef openings in Alabama. Birmingham leads as the state's largest metro with a dense restaurant and hotel market, Huntsville's rapid corporate and defense-sector growth has expanded its hospitality footprint, and Mobile's Gulf Coast tourism and convention activity sustains consistent demand at waterfront hotels and event venues.
Are there remote chef jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're rare. Cooking is fundamentally a hands-on, kitchen-based profession, so almost all positions require an on-site presence. About 0% of chef openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles tend to be in culinary consulting, menu development, or food and beverage management where planning work can be done off-site.
How can I get hired as a chef in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a prep cook or kitchen assistant role at a hotel, university dining hall, or high-volume casual restaurant in Birmingham or Huntsville, where turnover creates frequent openings for candidates without a full resume. Alabama community colleges with culinary programs often have direct relationships with local employers who hire their graduates. Earning a Certified Food Protection Manager credential before applying gives candidates a clear edge over others at the entry level.
Where can I find and apply to chef jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to chef jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Alabama employers. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each one.
