INTRODUCTION
As a member of Garver’s growing Water Design Center, the Senior Structural Engineer will be responsible for developing structural designs in support of water and wastewater treatment projects and related facilities. The Senior Structural Engineer will lead a project team of junior engineers, designers, and technicians to produce plans and specifications and manage workload on various Water Business Line projects. This role in the Water Design Center will consist of providing structural support as required for a variety of water and wastewater projects, but the majority of the expected assignments will be related to developing structural designs for new water and wastewater treatment plants or improvements to existing water and wastewater treatment facilities.
Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for performing numerous structural design tasks related to water and wastewater facilities, such as:
- Leading a project team producing structural designs for water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, lift stations, tanks, vaults, and other ancillary structures associated with water and sewer infrastructure projects
- Typical designs will include treatment process basins, chemical facilities, administration buildings, retaining walls, and other supporting structures
- The structural group will be responsible for the structural design calculations, coordination with other disciplines, coordination with regional offices and regulating agencies, construction cost estimating, and quality assurance and control
- Assist the Structural Group Leader in managing and mentoring teams, coordinating schedules, monitoring budgets, and ensuring delivery of quality work products that adhere to Garver standards
- Some travel may be required, as projects may require field work for site assessment of project locations and support during construction
Primary responsibilities of the Senior Structural Engineer will include:
- Leading a project team in the production of structural designs with a great deal of autonomy
- Quality program compliance, including ensuring delivery of quality work products that adhere to Garver standardization
- Work within a multi-disciplined team (civil, process, mechanical, electrical, and I&C) of engineers, designers, and technicians in the development of various Water Business Line projects
- Manage multiple projects concurrently
- Time management and work product quality
- Mentor, equip, train, develop, and engage junior team members to become effective design professionals and undertake increasingly more complex assignments and responsibilities as they grow
Due to the collaborative nature of coordination for large infrastructure projects, candidates must have the ability to seek out and resolve issues through close interaction with other project team members. In addition, the candidate must be able to maintain a positive team attitude and interpersonal effectiveness to recruit, develop, and maintain an efficient and productive structural team.

Align your portfolio to infrastructure tech
Garver's software work supports civil and environmental engineering projects, not SaaS products. Highlight experience with GIS platforms, asset management systems, or data pipelines for infrastructure clients before you apply.
Confirm LCA filing before your start date
Your employer must receive a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL before USCIS can approve your H-1B petition. Ask Garver's HR team for the expected LCA submission date so you can track the timeline accurately.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Garver posts Senior Software Engineering openings across multiple offices and project teams. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles that match your visa category so you're targeting positions where sponsorship is already on the table.
Verify your OPT or CPT authorization covers consulting
Consulting firms bill clients for your time, which can create complications with CPT authorization requirements. Confirm with your Designated School Official that your work authorization explicitly permits client-site or project-based consulting arrangements before accepting an offer.
Prepare a degree equivalency evaluation early
Senior engineering roles at consulting firms often require USCIS to assess whether a foreign credential meets specialty occupation standards. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization strengthens your H-1B petition and reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence.

Find Senior Software Engineering at Garver JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Garver sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Garver sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles. The company operates across consulting disciplines where specialized technical skills are in demand, and it has an established process for supporting H-1B petitions. Your role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which senior-level software engineering positions in consulting typically meet.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Garver?
Applications go through Garver's careers portal, where openings are listed by discipline and office location. Before applying, review the project focus of each posting since Garver's software roles vary across transportation, water, and energy practice areas. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate to identify which positions are actively seeking candidates who need work authorization.
Which visa types does Garver commonly use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Garver sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1, EB-2, and EB-3 for qualifying roles. H-1B is the primary nonimmigrant path for Senior Software Engineers. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible professional categories. EB-2 and EB-3 cover employment-based Green Card pathways for candidates pursuing permanent residence through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Garver expect for Senior Software Engineering positions?
Senior roles at Garver typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field, along with substantial professional experience. Given the consulting context, experience with systems that serve infrastructure or government clients adds real weight to your application. USCIS also requires the degree field to align directly with the job duties for H-1B specialty occupation approval.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Senior Software Engineering role at Garver?
For H-1B, the timeline depends on the lottery and whether premium processing is used. Cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date. Standard USCIS processing takes three to six months; premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. OPT and TN authorizations move faster and can support an earlier start, making them practical bridging options while a longer-term petition is pending.
