Certify Your Technical Credentials Before Applying
U.S. employers in equipment rental prioritize verifiable trade certifications. If you hold diesel, hydraulics, or heavy equipment credentials from outside the U.S., get them evaluated by a NACES-approved credential assessment service before your first interview.
Target Branch Locations With High Fleet Density
United Rentals operates hundreds of branches, but locations near major construction corridors hire maintenance technicians most aggressively. Research which regions have large aerial and earthmoving fleet concentrations, since those branches carry the deepest ongoing service staffing needs.
Distinguish OPT From CPT When Timing Your Application
If you're on an F-1 visa, apply during your final semester so OPT authorization aligns with a full-time start date. United Rentals hires under both CPT and OPT, but the timelines differ and a gap between CPT end and OPT start can complicate onboarding.
Understand the LCA Before Your Offer Stage
For H-1B sponsorship, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS ever sees your petition. Knowing this sequence lets you ask informed questions about prevailing wage compliance and anticipated filing timelines during the offer conversation.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Maintenance Roles by Visa Type
Search Migrate Mate to surface United Rentals maintenance openings filtered by the visa categories they sponsor. This saves time you'd otherwise spend verifying sponsorship eligibility role by role across a large, distributed job board.
Ask About TN Eligibility If You Hold Canadian or Mexican Citizenship
TN status covers certain engineering and technical occupations and doesn't require lottery selection. If your maintenance role involves industrial or mechanical engineering functions, confirm with the hiring team whether the position's job duties support a TN classification before pursuing H-1B.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does United Rentals sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenances?
Yes, United Rentals sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Maintenance roles. Sponsorship is most common where the position meets USCIS specialty occupation criteria, typically roles with a technical or engineering component rather than purely trade-level labor. Your job description needs to clearly reflect the degree-level requirements that H-1B classification demands, so the role's scope matters as much as your qualifications.
How do I apply for Maintenance jobs at United Rentals?
You can apply directly through United Rentals' careers portal or browse open Maintenance positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Before applying, confirm that your technical certifications are documented and ready to share, since United Rentals' Maintenance hiring often moves quickly from application to phone screen for candidates with verifiable hands-on equipment experience.
Which visa types are commonly used for Maintenance roles at United Rentals?
United Rentals has sponsored H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, EB-2, and EB-3 visas for workers in their operations. For Maintenance specifically, F-1 OPT is a common entry point for recent graduates, while H-1B and EB-3 are more typical for longer-term sponsorship. TN visa is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in roles with qualifying technical or engineering duties.
What qualifications does United Rentals expect for sponsored Maintenance roles?
Most sponsored Maintenance roles at United Rentals require a combination of formal education and hands-on experience with heavy or aerial equipment. Diesel mechanics, hydraulic systems knowledge, and OEM certification for brands like JLG, Skyjack, or Genie are frequently referenced in their postings. For H-1B eligibility specifically, the position typically needs a defined specialty field, so roles with an industrial or mechanical engineering scope are better candidates than general service technician positions.
How do I time my application around United Rentals' visa sponsorship process?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with USCIS accepting registrations in March for an October 1 start date. If you're already in F-1 OPT status, you have more flexibility since United Rentals can bring you on and file the H-1B while you're actively working. For PERM-based Green Card pathways through EB-2 or EB-3, the process typically takes one to several years, so it's worth raising the subject during offer negotiations rather than waiting until after you've started.
