Proposed Faculty Rank Clinical Assistant Professor (Career Line)
Department 00085 - Communication
City Salt Lake City, UT
Track Non Tenure Track
New Position to Begin 07/01/2026
Details
The Department of Communication at the University of Utah invites applications for a career-line (non tenure-track) faculty position focused on studio-based media production and journalism. This position will play a key role supporting the department’s expanding ESPN/ESPN+/Utes Productions partnership, which launches in Fall 2026 and will grow progressively as the studio begins operations and new curriculum is developed in areas like production and broadcasting. This growth aims to connect students to internships and job opportunities through hands-on, experience-based learning. This position also serves as a crucial contributor to the department’s growing journalism emphasis.
This faculty member will be instrumental in teaching practical skills such as video, audio, and streaming production; developing related curriculum and courses; and helping shape the future of curriculum with the department. We seek an applicant with strong applied media skills who can move fluently between media production and journalistic storytelling and who enjoys working in a production-forward, industry-connected environment.
Position Overview
This position will serve as a studio-centered leader and teaching faculty focused on skills-based courses, coordinating applied learning opportunities and helping students bridge media production and journalism contexts. The teaching load will likely be a 3/3 (three courses in the fall and three courses in the spring) with administrative duties related to Utes Production including curricular expansion, technology coordination, and internship advancement. This position emphasizes hands-on instruction, curricular coordination and partnership development rather than traditional research expectations. While this position will work in collaboration with Utes Production (which produces content for ESPN/ESPN+), it is not exclusive to the broadcast studio. A background in sports media may be helpful but is not required.
Areas of Responsibility
The successful candidate will teach skills-based courses in journalism, media production and/or strategic communication. Core teaching areas include video, audio, and streaming production, broadcast journalism, and broader media production. Other teaching opportunities may include podcasting, digital photography, web design and content strategy, community or specialty reporting, campaigns, and branded content or applied storytelling.
Additional responsibilities include supporting and helping coordinate the department’s studio and production infrastructure, including equipment, workflows and space planning; developing and maintaining industry-connected experiential learning pathways, including internships and project-based courses tied to the ESPN/ESPN+/Utes Production partnership; collaborating with campus partners, athletics and community organizations; and contributing to curriculum development across journalism and strategic communication, particularly where the two areas intersect.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in media production, journalism, communication, strategic communication, media studies or a closely related field
Demonstrated professional experience in journalism, media and video production, strategic communication or related applied media fields
Evidence of strong teaching or training experience in skills-based or production-oriented courses
Ability to work across media production, journalistic and/or strategic communication contexts
Preferred Qualifications
Industry experience in digital media, broadcasting, streaming, strategic communication, social media, podcasting, or multimedia storytelling
Experience coordinating studios, production teams or applied learning programs
Familiarity with internships, partnerships or experiential learning models
Interest in areas such as AI, sports, media law, platform governance or digital strategy, as they relate to journalism and communication
About the Department
The Department of Communication is experiencing significant and sustained enrollment growth across journalism and strategic communication and is investing heavily in applied, studio-based education. Both programs have seen substantial increases in recent years, reflecting strong student interest in hands-on, professionally oriented education. Despite this growth, we maintain hands-on, laboratory-style learning environments in our skills-based courses to ensure excellent pedagogy and individualized instruction. The ESPN/ESPN+/Utes Production partnership represents a major expansion of hands-on, industry-aligned learning opportunities for students.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit:
A cover letter describing professional background, teaching interests, and industry interests or connections/aspirations
A curriculum vitae or résumé
Writing sample
Evidence of teaching effectiveness or professional work (e.g., portfolio links, syllabi, or work samples) (Upload as “Applicant Document – Other”)
* Three references (names and emails) to be contacted during final stage interviews
The deadline for submitting application materials is March 12th, 2026. For questions, please email the search committee chair, Marcie Young Cancio at Marcie.Young.Cancio@utah.edu.

Align your credentials to Utah's clinical framework
University of Utah Clinical Assistant roles often sit within accredited health sciences departments, so your credentials need to map cleanly to a specific clinical discipline. Verify your foreign degree equivalency before applying, since USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation alignment for H-1B petitions in clinical settings.
Target departments with active international hiring
University of Utah's clinical hiring spans nursing, allied health, and research-adjacent roles. Focus applications on departments like the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine or University of Utah Health, where clinical support roles with international candidates appear most consistently.
Browse Clinical Assistant openings through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Clinical Assistant jobs at University of Utah by visa type, so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed. It cuts out the guesswork before you even submit your application.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Before accepting any offer, confirm whether the University is sponsoring an H-1B, E-3, TN, or Green Card pathway. University HR departments handle each filing differently, and knowing which route applies affects your timeline, your start date, and your long-term status planning.
Prepare your OPT or CPT documentation early if applicable
If you're transitioning from F-1 status, your DSO at your current institution must authorize OPT or CPT before your University of Utah start date. DOL requires the LCA to be certified before your H-1B petition is filed, so delays in your authorization can push back your entire timeline.
Account for PERM timing if a Green Card is the goal
University of Utah sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 petitions for eligible clinical staff, but PERM labor certification can take a year or more before USCIS even receives the I-140. Factor that into your status planning, especially if you're on a visa with a fixed validity window.

Find Clinical Assistant at University of Utah JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Utah sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Assistants?
Yes, University of Utah sponsors H-1B visas for Clinical Assistant roles that qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards. The role needs to require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific clinical or scientific field. Because the University is a higher education institution, it qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means petitions can be filed at any time without waiting for the annual lottery.
How do I apply for Clinical Assistant jobs at University of Utah?
Applications are submitted through the University of Utah's official careers portal. Search for Clinical Assistant roles by department or job family, and review each posting for sponsorship eligibility before applying. You can also browse confirmed sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which filters University of Utah Clinical Assistant jobs by visa type so you know upfront whether your situation is a fit.
Which visa types does University of Utah commonly use for Clinical Assistant roles?
University of Utah sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Clinical Assistant roles, depending on your nationality and current immigration status. H-1B is the most broadly applicable pathway. E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens. TN covers Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying clinical occupations. J-1 is common for clinical training or research-based placements within academic medical settings.
What qualifications does University of Utah expect for Clinical Assistant roles?
Qualifications vary by department, but most Clinical Assistant positions require a relevant bachelor's degree in a health sciences, biological sciences, or clinical field. Some roles in research or allied health may require licensure or certification specific to Utah. For H-1B eligibility, your degree must align directly with the duties of the role, not just the industry, so a general science degree may not be sufficient for a specialized clinical function.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Clinical Assistant at University of Utah?
For H-1B, the University typically files after an offer is accepted and an LCA is certified by the DOL, which takes around seven business days under normal conditions. Standard USCIS processing then adds three to five months, though premium processing can reduce that to around 15 business days. For Green Card pathways like EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM labor certification phase alone can take 12 months or more before the I-140 petition is filed.
