Executive Chef Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a executive chef in New York?
The most direct path is completing a culinary arts program at an accredited New York institution, such as the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park or the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City, then building progressive kitchen leadership experience. New York does not require a state culinary license, but executive chef candidates in New York City must hold a valid Food Protection Certificate issued by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which requires passing a proctored exam.
How much do executive chefs make in New York?
Executive chefs in New York earn a median of about $70,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,260 for the lowest 10% to over $120,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire executive chefs in New York?
Employers hiring executive chefs in New York right now include Sodexo, Aramark, and Columbia University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of luxury hotels, Michelin-recognized restaurants, and large corporate dining accounts means consistent year-round demand from both independent operators and national hospitality groups headquartered or with major properties in the state.
Which New York cities have the most executive chef jobs?
New York, Delhi, and East Norwich have the most executive chef openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume given its concentration of world-class restaurants, flagship hotel properties, and large corporate dining operations, while Albany attracts postings from state government facilities and regional hospitality groups, and Buffalo's growing restaurant and casino hospitality scene has expanded employer demand in western New York.
Are there remote executive chef jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Executive chef roles are inherently hands-on, requiring daily kitchen presence, staff supervision, and service oversight. About 0% of executive chef openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be consulting or culinary director roles where menu development and vendor sourcing can be handled off-site between on-location visits.
How can I get hired as a executive chef in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a line cook or sous chef role at a New York hotel group or multi-outlet restaurant company that promotes from within, then building toward an executive chef title over several years. Large New York operators like Marriott and Compass Group run structured kitchen management training tracks for junior culinary staff, and earning a New York City Food Protection Certificate early signals professional readiness to hiring managers across the state.
Where can I find and apply to executive chef jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to executive chef jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, identify the positions that match your experience and the type of operation you want to work in, and apply directly to each one.
