Sous Chef Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sous chef in New York?
The most direct path is working up through a New York kitchen from cook or chef de partie, building experience across multiple stations. New York does not require a state culinary license to work as a sous chef, but New York City mandates a Food Protection Certificate for anyone supervising food handling operations. Many candidates strengthen their candidacy through a culinary degree from institutions like the Institute of Culinary Education or the Culinary Institute of America, both with strong New York placement networks.
Which companies hire sous chefs in New York?
Employers hiring sous chefs in New York right now include Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, Delaware North, and Eataly Silicon Valley, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of hotels, private clubs, and large restaurant groups means consistent openings appear across both independent operations and national hospitality brands with permanent New York properties.
Which New York cities have the most sous chef jobs?
New York, Library Rd, and Buffalo have the most sous chef openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its unmatched density of fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels, and large catering operations, while Albany and Buffalo draw demand from institutional dining, regional hotel groups, and university food service programs anchored by major campuses and medical centers in those markets.
Are there remote sous chef jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Sous chef work is almost entirely hands-on and kitchen-based, so remote arrangements are the exception rather than the norm. About 0% of sous chef openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve menu consulting, recipe development oversight, or culinary training coordination rather than daily kitchen management.
How can I get hired as a sous chef in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a cook or chef de partie role at a New York hotel group or large restaurant operation and building upward from there. Compass Group, Aramark, and Sodexo all run associate culinary programs and entry-level kitchen roles at New York institutions, hospitals, and corporate campuses that transition candidates into supervisory positions. Completing the New York City Food Protection Certificate before applying gives candidates a concrete credential that demonstrates readiness for a leadership role.
Where can I find and apply to sous chef jobs in New York?
