Outside Sales Representative Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a outside sales representative in Illinois?
Most outside sales representative roles in Illinois require a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related field, though many employers also hire candidates with demonstrated field sales experience in place of a degree. Illinois does not require a state-issued license for general outside sales work, but roles in regulated industries like insurance or real estate require the relevant Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation license before you can sell in the state.
How much do outside sales representatives make in Illinois?
Outside sales representatives in Illinois earn a median of about $73,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $44,130 for the lowest 10% to over $134,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire outside sales representatives in Illinois?
Employers hiring outside sales representatives in Illinois right now include Andrew Meier, Orkin, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's deep concentration of manufacturing, healthcare, and technology companies means outside sales roles are available across a broad range of industries and territory types throughout the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most outside sales representative jobs?
Chicago, Elgin, and Naperville have the most outside sales representative openings in Illinois. Chicago's density of corporate headquarters and enterprise clients drives the largest share of postings, while Naperville and Schaumburg attract significant volume because major employers in manufacturing, technology distribution, and healthcare have regional offices concentrated in the western and northwestern suburbs.
Are there remote outside sales representative jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're rare. Outside sales is defined by in-person client visits and territory coverage, so most roles require regular field presence rather than remote work. About 50% of outside sales representative openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote options most common in software or SaaS sales where customer meetings can shift to video for early-stage prospecting.
How can I get hired as a outside sales representative in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting in an inside sales or sales development representative role at a large Illinois employer, then transitioning to a field territory once you have documented results. Companies like Grainger and Baxter International run structured sales rotational or associate programs for early-career candidates. A background in customer-facing roles such as retail management or account coordination, combined with a relevant Illinois community college business certificate, helps candidates without a four-year degree stand out.
