Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in Maryland?
Whiting-Turner Contracting, headquartered in Baltimore, is among the most active construction H-1B visa sponsors in Maryland. Clark Construction Group, based in Bethesda, and Hensel Phelps also file H-1B petitions for Maryland-based roles. Large engineering and design firms with significant Maryland project portfolios, such as AECOM and WSP, regularly sponsor H-1B workers in construction-adjacent roles. Sponsorship activity tends to concentrate on technical and management positions rather than trade labor.
Which cities in Maryland have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Baltimore and the Montgomery County corridor, including Bethesda and Rockville, account for the largest share of construction H-1B sponsorship activity in Maryland. The D.C. suburbs in Prince George's County also generate steady demand, driven by federal construction projects and transit expansion. Annapolis sees activity tied to state government and institutional projects. Baltimore's ongoing commercial and infrastructure redevelopment makes it the single most active market for sponsored construction roles.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in construction is generally limited to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. In Maryland, this typically includes civil engineers, structural engineers, project engineers, construction managers, and BIM specialists. Site labor, foremen, and general trades roles do not qualify because they don't meet the specialty occupation standard. Roles with a clear connection between the required degree and the job duties are the most defensible H-1B petitions.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers looking for H-1B sponsorship, and you can filter directly by construction roles in Maryland to see verified sponsoring employers. This saves significant time compared to manually screening job postings that rarely disclose sponsorship availability upfront. Migrate Mate focuses exclusively on visa sponsorship opportunities, so the listings you see are from employers with a documented history of filing H-1B petitions in relevant industries and states.
Are there any Maryland-specific considerations for H-1B construction jobs?
Maryland's construction market is heavily influenced by federal contracting, particularly around the D.C. suburbs and defense installations such as Fort Meade and the Aberdeen Proving Ground. Many federal contractors require security clearances for project access, which can complicate H-1B sponsorship timelines since clearance processing for foreign nationals involves additional steps. State-funded transit projects, including Purple Line construction, have also created demand for H-1B-eligible engineering roles with firms operating under public sector contracts.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
