Virginia does not mandate a state-issued license for general business sales work. However, candidates targeting federal or defense-sector sales in Northern Virginia often pursue security clearance eligibility, while those in financial or insurance-adjacent sales may need FINRA registration or a Virginia insurance license through the Virginia State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance.
How much do business sales representatives make in Virginia?
Business sales representatives in Virginia earn a median of about $72,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,700 for the lowest 10% to over $169,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business sales representatives in Virginia?
Employers hiring business sales representatives in Virginia right now include Comcast, GeoMarvel, and SelectQuote, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's large defense and technology contractor base, particularly in the Northern Virginia corridor, creates steady demand for sales professionals with government account experience.
Which Virginia cities have the most business sales representative jobs?
Virginia, Richmond, and Alexandria account for the largest share of business sales representative openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms drives the bulk of enterprise sales hiring, while Richmond's corporate headquarters and financial services sector and Virginia Beach's growing commercial and telecommunications market contribute meaningfully to statewide demand.
Are there remote business sales representative jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and they are fairly common given that much of the role involves phone, video, and digital outreach. About 75% of business sales representative openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of inside sales and account management work. Roles focused on territory field sales or in-person government client relationships remain predominantly on-site.
How can I get hired as a business sales representative in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a sales development representative or business development representative role, which large Virginia employers in the technology and defense sectors regularly post as onboarding positions requiring no prior sales experience. Companies like Leidos and SAIC run structured early-career programs in Northern Virginia for new graduates. An associate's or bachelor's degree in business or marketing, combined with any CRM certification, gives candidates a clear edge when applying to these entry-level pipelines.
