Business Development Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business development in Virginia?
Most business development roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related discipline. Virginia does not issue a state license for business development professionals, so entry typically comes through demonstrated sales or client management experience. In the Northern Virginia market, familiarity with federal procurement processes and the ability to obtain a security clearance are frequently decisive hiring factors. Completing a recognized professional development program such as an APMP certification for proposal professionals can also strengthen a candidacy.
Which companies hire business developments in Virginia?
Companies currently hiring business developments in Virginia include American Heart Association, Patriot Group International, and Capital One, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's defense and federal IT sectors mean a large share of openings come from government contractors and professional services firms with deep roots in the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most business development jobs?
Richmond, Arlington, and Virginia Beach have the most business development openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of defense contractors and federal agencies, while Richmond draws hiring from financial services, healthcare systems, and regional corporate headquarters, and Hampton Roads supports openings tied to military and maritime industries.
Are there remote business development jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many fields, since business development work is largely relationship-driven and phone or video-based rather than hands-on. About 72% of business development openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broad employer flexibility in this profession. Client-facing roles focused on government capture or in-person executive briefings tend to remain the most on-site.
How can I get hired as a business development in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a sales development representative or inside sales role at a Northern Virginia technology or government contracting firm, then moving into business development after demonstrating pipeline results. Large Virginia employers like Leidos and SAIC run rotational and associate programs that bring in candidates from adjacent roles such as proposal coordinator, account manager, or marketing analyst. Earning an entry-level project management or proposal writing credential, and understanding Virginia's federal contracting landscape, gives early-career candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to business development jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to business development jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and target market, and apply directly to the ones that fit your goals.
