Align your credentials to ABB's specialty occupation standard
H-1B eligibility requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. For Business Development Manager positions at ABB, a degree in engineering, industrial management, or a related technical field strengthens your petition far more than a generalist business background.
Target ABB's industrial automation and electrification divisions
ABB's Business Development Manager openings cluster in divisions like Motion, Electrification, and Process Automation. Positioning your background around one of these verticals, rather than applying broadly, signals the technical depth ABB's hiring managers look for.
Address long sales cycle experience in your application materials
ABB sells to industrial and manufacturing clients with procurement cycles that can run months or years. Your resume and cover letter should show you've managed complex, multi-stakeholder B2B deals, not just transactional sales environments.
Clarify your work authorization status early in the process
Raise your visa situation before the offer stage, not after. ABB's hiring teams are experienced with H-1B and Green Card filings, but they need time to involve legal counsel. Waiting until you have an offer in hand compresses the filing timeline unnecessarily.
Understand PERM timing if you're targeting permanent residence
If ABB sponsors you for an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, PERM labor certification must be filed with DOL before the immigrant petition. The PERM process alone can take six to twelve months, so start that conversation with your ABB HR contact well before your H-1B expires.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Business Development Manager roles at ABB
ABB posts sponsorship-eligible roles across multiple locations and divisions simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter for current Business Development Manager openings at ABB that match your visa type, so you're applying to live roles, not listings that have already closed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ABB sponsor H-1B visas for Business Development Managers?
Yes. ABB has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas for Business Development Manager roles, particularly in its industrial automation and electrification divisions. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation when the candidate holds a relevant technical or business degree. ABB works with immigration counsel to manage the petition process, but you should confirm sponsorship availability with the specific hiring team during the interview stage.
How do I apply for Business Development Manager jobs at ABB?
You can apply directly through ABB's careers portal or browse sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where visa sponsorship is confirmed. When applying, tailor your materials to the specific ABB division you're targeting. ABB's Business Development Manager roles vary in focus across electrification, process automation, and motion segments, so a targeted application outperforms a generic one.
Which visa types does ABB commonly use for Business Development Manager roles?
ABB primarily sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development Managers, which requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation and your employer to file a Labor Condition Application with DOL. For longer-term permanent residence, ABB has filed EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant petitions for employees in this function. The pathway depends on your qualifications, your degree field, and how long you've been with the company.
What qualifications does ABB expect for Business Development Manager roles?
ABB's Business Development Manager positions in manufacturing and industrial automation typically require a bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or a related technical field, combined with demonstrated experience selling complex industrial solutions. Familiarity with ABB's product segments, such as drives, switchgear, or process control systems, is a practical differentiator. Candidates who've managed long-cycle B2B deals in industrial or manufacturing environments are consistently competitive.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining ABB as a Business Development Manager?
For an H-1B transfer from another sponsor, ABB can file a portability petition that lets you start work as soon as USCIS receives the petition, rather than waiting for approval. Cap-subject H-1B petitions follow the annual April lottery, with employment starting October 1 at the earliest. If ABB pursues a Green Card through PERM, budget six to eighteen months for the full process from labor certification through the immigrant petition.
