Patient Services plays a critical role in helping ensure patients can access and stay on therapy through coordinated support, operational excellence, and cross‑functional alignment.
With an increasing number of launches, patient support programs, and enterprise initiatives underway, this role provides strategic direction, operational leadership, and execution discipline to ensure APS priorities are clearly defined, well sequenced, and delivered with impact.
This position leads the key strategic and financial business planning cycles to drive strong business performance and cross-team coordination, including the Financial Plan and LRP process and annual Strategic Plan. The role requires strong marketing acumen, including fluency in AbbVie’s 1‑7‑5 framework, enterprise positioning, and strategic narrative development to ensure APS priorities are aligned to brand, franchise, and enterprise strategies.
The Director serves as a strategic partner to leadership, turning enterprise priorities into action, anticipating needs, and keeping work aligned across levels. A key skill in this role is being a strong connector and influencer — knowing who to engage, how to bring people together, and how to move things forward.
This role also plays a key role in leading enterprise change management and transformation efforts across APS, ensuring new operating models, ways of working, and strategic initiatives are adopted effectively and delivered with sustained impact.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the enterprise strategy lead for APS, owning enterprise-wide alignment across Therapeutic Business Units and Functions to ensure priorities are clearly understood, coordinated, and executed.
- Lead APS enterprise strategy formation and execution, translating long-range strategic imperatives into annual priorities, goals, and actionable plans while maintaining enterprise-level visibility to track progress and inform course correction, and ensuring strategic initiatives translate into measurable operational effectiveness and efficiency.
- Operate as a central connector across APS leadership, Therapeutic Business Units, and key enterprise partners (e.g., Finance, Brand, Global, Brand Excellence, Business Communications), working fluidly up, down, and across the organization to ensure strategy, planning, and execution remain tightly integrated.
- Develop executive-level presentations and decision-ready materials for the Vice President, Patient Services and provides strategic counsel to set the agenda for staff and extended leadership meetings to ensure strategic initiatives and goal attainment are pulled through.
- Own APS enterprise planning and financial cycles end-to-end, including LBE, Annual Planning, LRP, and Investment Allocation, ensuring disciplined prioritization, sequencing, and resource allocation aligned to strategic and performance objectives.
- Lead the APS enterprise Investment Allocation process in partnership with Finance and APEX, owning enterprise-level tradeoff discussions and delivering decision-ready recommendations with clear options, risks, and implications for leadership while ensuring disciplined allocation of resources across TBUs and initiatives.
- Apply AbbVie’s 1‑7‑5 marketing framework to enterprise strategy and planning, ensuring APS strategies, positioning, and investment decisions are grounded in clear intent and value creation.
Key Stakeholders
- Vice President, AbbVie Patient Services
- AbbVie Patient Services Senior Leadership Team, direct and extended teams
- Finance, APEX, Brand Excellence, Global EPE, and Business Communications partners
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, strategy, healthcare administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in enterprise strategy, strategic operations, or business planning within pharma, biotech, or healthcare organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in complex, matrixed environments, influencing outcomes across senior leaders, teams, and functions without direct authority.
- Track record of leading complex, high-visibility enterprise initiatives and driving sustained adoption through change management and transformation.
- Exceptional executive communication skills, including the ability to distill complexity into clear, succinct, and decision-ready insights and materials.
- Proven judgment, discretion, and ability to anticipate issues and manage competing priorities in fast-paced environments.
- Proven experience leading enterprise or business-unit Long-Range Planning (LRP), Annual Planning, and budget management, including investment prioritization and performance-based decision making.
- Strong marketing and strategic positioning experience, including working knowledge of AbbVie’s 1‑7‑5 framework and its application at enterprise and brand levels.

Frame Your Credentials Around Biopharma Strategy
AbbVie's Strategy function focuses on portfolio prioritization, market access, and pipeline commercialization. Translate your experience into those terms before applying. Reviewers are looking for demonstrated fluency in pharmaceutical business models, not generic corporate strategy.
Target Roles That Align With Your Visa Type
AbbVie sponsors multiple visa categories, including H-1B, E-3, and TN. Knowing which category applies to you shapes your timeline. Australian citizens should prioritize E-3 roles since there's no lottery, which means you can start much sooner than H-1B candidates.
Search for Strategy Openings Using Migrate Mate
AbbVie posts Strategy roles across corporate, commercial, and R&D divisions. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for AbbVie Strategy positions that accept visa sponsorship, so you're not manually screening hundreds of listings without knowing sponsorship status upfront.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During Early Interviews
AbbVie sponsors both temporary work visas and permanent residence pathways, including EB-2 and EB-3. Ask early whether sponsorship covers only the initial work visa or includes PERM and Green Card filing. The answer affects your long-term planning significantly.
Account for LCA Filing Before Your Start Date
Before AbbVie can file an H-1B or E-3 petition with USCIS, the Department of Labor must certify a Labor Condition Application. Build at least two to three weeks into your expected start date for LCA certification, especially if you're transitioning from another employer.
Prepare a Portfolio of Quantified Strategic Outputs
AbbVie's Strategy interviews assess analytical rigor and business impact. Come prepared with documented examples of market entry analyses, competitive assessments, or business case development. Vague claims about strategic thinking won't differentiate you in a field of similarly credentialed candidates.

Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Strategys?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Strategy roles. The H-1B is the most common pathway for international candidates in this function, particularly those already in the U.S. on OPT or a prior employer's H-1B. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual lottery, timing your application around the April cap season matters. If you're an Australian citizen, the E-3 is a faster and lottery-free alternative that AbbVie also supports.
How do I apply for Strategy jobs at AbbVie?
Applications go through AbbVie's careers portal at careers.abbvie.com. Strategy roles sit across multiple divisions including Corporate Strategy, Commercial Operations, and Business Development, so search broadly rather than filtering by a single department. Migrate Mate also aggregates AbbVie Strategy openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, which saves time if you need to confirm sponsorship availability before investing in an application.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly use for Strategy roles?
AbbVie supports a broad range of visa categories for Strategy positions, including H-1B, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican professionals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 for permanent residence. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and whether you're applying from inside or outside the U.S.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Strategy roles?
Most Strategy roles at AbbVie require a bachelor's degree in business, economics, life sciences, or a related field, with an MBA or advanced degree preferred for senior positions. AbbVie particularly values experience in pharmaceutical or biotech commercial strategy, including market access, competitive intelligence, or pipeline valuation. Candidates transitioning from consulting who lack direct biopharma exposure should build that context into their application materials explicitly.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take once AbbVie extends an offer?
Timeline depends on visa type. An E-3 can move from offer to approval in four to six weeks if you're applying at a U.S. consulate abroad. An H-1B transfer for candidates already in H-1B status can take four to eight weeks with standard processing, or as little as two to three weeks with premium processing. New H-1B cap filings require waiting for the April lottery, which can push your start date by up to 12 months if you miss a cycle.
