About The Team
DoorDash Labs is a team within DoorDash building autonomous delivery robots from the ground up as part of DoorDash's core delivery platform. Our mission is to make autonomous last-mile delivery a reality at city scale — reliably, efficiently, and profitably. With autonomy proven on real sidewalks, we are now focused on scaling our hardware platform from hundreds of deployed robots to thousands and beyond, with a global expansion roadmap through 2030.
About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Director of Hardware and Vehicle Development to own the full hardware lifecycle at DoorDash Labs — from detailed product engineering through volume manufacturing and field service. In your first 90 days, you will get deeply embedded with the engineering and manufacturing teams, lead the selection of a contract manufacturing partner, and develop a lean hiring plan to fill key gaps. A year from now, success looks like a scaled hardware organization, with a clear path to robot profitability and a team that can sustain growth without you being the bottleneck on every decision.
You're Excited About This Opportunity Because You Will…
- Own end-to-end hardware: lead engineering, manufacturing, and field service for our autonomous robot platform, with direct accountability for hitting scale milestones
- Build the team: shape the hardware organization from the ground up, with the authority and budget to bring in exceptional talent — including people from your own network
- Partner across the company: work closely with autonomy, product, and operations teams to translate system requirements into hardware decisions and manufacturing reality
- Drive profitability: lead the shift from proving the technology to reducing cost and improving efficiency, with robot-level profitability as a near-term goal
- Operate with real ownership: this is not a coordination role — you will set the roadmap, make the calls, and be accountable for outcomes in a program that is moving fast and has visible impact
We’re Excited About You Because…
- You have 15+ years of experience in hardware, automotive, or a closely related field, with at least 4-5 years leading a hardware organization at the senior director or VP level
- You have taken a hardware program from early development through volume manufacturing — ideally building something from scratch where you had to develop new approaches rather than inherit mature processes
- You have a track record of building high-performing teams and bringing exceptional people with you — your former colleagues want to come work for you again
- You have selected and managed contract manufacturers and know what a strong CM relationship requires from selection through production ramp
- You are comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment with aggressive timelines, and you know how to identify which processes add value and which ones to skip
Compensation
The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the pay range listed below and is determined based on job-related factors including, but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. Base salary is localized according to an employee’s work location. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future. In addition to base salary, the compensation for this role includes opportunities for equity grants. Talk to your recruiter for more information.
DoorDash cares about you and your overall well-being. That’s why we offer a comprehensive benefits package to all regular employees, which includes a 401(k) plan with employer matching, 16 weeks of paid parental leave, wellness benefits, commuter benefits match, paid time off and paid sick leave in compliance with applicable laws (e.g. Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act). DoorDash also offers medical, dental, and vision benefits, 11 paid holidays, disability and basic life insurance, family-forming assistance, and a mental health program, among others. Align your credentials to DoorDash's PM framework
DoorDash evaluates Project Development Managers on cross-functional ownership and delivery at scale. Before applying, reframe your resume around measurable outcomes from product launches or operational programs, not just task ownership. Ambiguity tolerance and stakeholder alignment are weighted heavily here.
Target roles flagged for specialty occupation eligibility
H-1B sponsorship requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. For Project Development Manager positions, your degree field should directly connect to the role's core functions. A degree in engineering, computer science, or business with a technical focus strengthens your petition considerably.
Ask about LCA filing timelines during offer negotiation
Before your start date is set, confirm whether your role requires a new Labor Condition Application through DOL. LCA certification typically takes seven business days but can stall if the job description or wage level needs adjustment. Getting clarity early prevents last-minute delays to your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter DoorDash openings by visa type
DoorDash posts Project Development Manager roles across multiple teams with varying sponsorship scopes. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by the visa types you hold or need, so you're only applying to roles where your specific sponsorship pathway is already supported.
Understand how DoorDash handles cap-exempt versus cap-subject petitions
If you're transferring from a university or nonprofit employer, your H-1B may already be cap-exempt and can be transferred to DoorDash without waiting for an October 1 start date. If you're entering the lottery, register in March and plan a start date no earlier than October 1 of the same year.
Verify your work authorization window before final offer acceptance
F-1 OPT holders in STEM extension have a 60-day grace period after employment ends. If you're between roles, confirm your I-94 expiration and OPT end date before signing. DoorDash's HR and immigration counsel will need accurate status dates to file timely extension or transfer paperwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DoorDash sponsor H-1B visas for Project Development Managers?
Yes, DoorDash sponsors H-1B visas for Project Development Manager roles. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, particularly when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as engineering, computer science, or business. Your employer files the petition on your behalf after DOL certifies the Labor Condition Application.
How do I apply for Project Development Manager jobs at DoorDash?
You can browse open Project Development Manager positions at DoorDash through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can identify positions aligned with your specific authorization needs. Once you identify a role, apply directly through DoorDash's careers portal. Tailor your application to highlight cross-functional project ownership, delivery metrics, and experience managing ambiguity in fast-moving product environments.
Which visa types does DoorDash commonly sponsor for Project Development Manager roles?
DoorDash sponsors a range of visa types for this function, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian nationals, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican professionals, and J-1 visa for eligible exchange visitors. For longer-term authorization, DoorDash also supports Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3 classifications, which typically involve PERM labor certification filed with DOL.
What qualifications does DoorDash expect for Project Development Manager candidates?
DoorDash generally looks for candidates with a background in product management, program management, or operations within a technology company. Strong emphasis is placed on experience leading cross-functional initiatives, working with engineering and design teams, and delivering measurable outcomes in fast-paced environments. A bachelor's degree in a technical or business discipline is standard, and prior experience at a consumer technology or marketplace company is viewed favorably.
How do I plan my timeline if I need DoorDash to file an H-1B petition for me?
H-1B registration opens in March each year, with a lottery selection shortly after. If selected, USCIS adjudicates petitions for an October 1 start date. Plan your job search to secure an offer well before the March registration window. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, DoorDash can file an H-1B transfer, allowing you to start as soon as the petition is received by USCIS.
