Are you interested in shaping economic advice to inform how we design, deliver and fund infrastructure projects to achieve real impact for the lives of New Zealanders?
KPMG’s Deal Advisory & Infrastructure team supports clients with high-value strategic, financial and commercial decisions. Through an experienced team that brings financial analysis skills, commercial acumen and strategic insights, we advise on large-scale infrastructure investment, public sector policy, commercial transactions, and mergers and acquisitions. Together we support sound investment decision-making to fuel New Zealand’s prosperity.
A collaborative and supportive environment, where we help our people to achieve personally and professionally, is really important to us. We’re proud of our working culture, as a team with diverse skillsets and backgrounds that enjoy working together on complex engagements for commercial and government clients.
The opportunity:
Our Wellington Deal Advisory & Infrastructure team is looking for an Associate Director / Director to lead and grow our infrastructure economics capability. We are seeking a professional with a strong technical foundation and experience in providing economic advice on infrastructure projects, ideally in transport, water, or urban development and regeneration.
We are keen to hear from candidates with experience in building a team and organisational capability in practical economic analysis. Our clients value advice that can inform decisions and lead to action, and we are seeking a leader who can help turn complex economic concepts into practical next steps.
Our ideal candidate would bring excellent analytical, team leadership and problem-solving skills with a background in government policy, infrastructure, finance, economics, or professional services.
Your day-to-day work:
As a senior member of the team, you will be responsible for leading and delivering high-quality economic analysis to inform large or complex infrastructure projects. This could include a mix of directly undertaking parts of the analysis, providing on-the-job guidance to the team, or completing quality assurance on the modelling and outputs before they are presented to clients. Your role would be client facing. It will require you to present your advice to client and to work collaboratively to respond to client request and questions.
As part of the Deal Advisory & Infrastructure team, you could be involved in:
- Strategy and planning – Supporting the development of new government policy or reform programmes, demand studies for new projects, or the development of programme business cases.
- Investment decision-making – Providing advice on government investment decisions, including economic analysis of options, benefit quantification and monetisation, risk modelling and scenario testing.
- Advice on infrastructure funding and finance – Providing independent advice on who will benefit from new infrastructure projects and using this to inform the design of funding streams and levies or the design of the finance solutions.
What you'll bring to the team:
Technical expertise
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in applying economic frameworks and analysis to inform the development of infrastructure projects. This can include demand projections, cost-benefit analysis and benefit monetisation, economic beneficiary analysis and scenario testing.
- Minimum of 3 years leading or providing final quality assurance on projects incorporating economic analysis and advice, including policy development, Budget bids, business cases, or infrastructure funding and finance advice.
- Experience in economic frameworks and analytical methods ideally related to transport, water, and/or urban development projects.
- Expertise in using data and analytics tools to analyse large data sets and develop actionable advice.
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills, including communicating solutions to complex issues in a simple and accessible way.
- Experience and knowledge of the Machinery of Government is highly desirable. We will also consider candidates with experience in providing economic advice to inform private sector infrastructure projects or infrastructure finance proposals.
Team and clients
- Focus on business development across key accounts related to our infrastructure economics offering.
- Development of training material and guidance to lift team capability in core economic concepts.
- An ability to build authentic internal and external relationships to be responsive to client needs.
- Dedication to supporting a collaborative and positive team culture.

Align your credentials to KPMG's practice areas
KPMG recruits Consultants into distinct practices: audit, tax, deal advisory, and management consulting. Tailor your resume and credentials to one track before applying. A generalist profile is harder to place than one anchored to a specific service line.
Pursue CPA licensure before your interview
KPMG's audit and tax Consultant roles almost universally expect CPA eligibility or active licensure. If you're on OPT, use that window to clear exam sections. Candidates who arrive CPA-eligible face fewer internal obstacles when the firm initiates sponsorship paperwork.
Target KPMG's campus recruiting cycle deliberately
KPMG fills most Consultant headcount through structured campus programs at target universities. Applications open in late summer for the following year's start dates. Applying through on-campus recruiting, rather than cold applying online, significantly improves your visibility to hiring managers.
Clarify E-3 eligibility early in the process
Australian nationals should confirm E-3 sponsorship availability during the offer stage, not after signing. KPMG's legal team can file an E-3 petition without the H-1B lottery, but you need to raise this explicitly. The firm's immigration counsel handles both, so the ask is routine.
Understand PERM timing relative to your status
If you're targeting an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card through KPMG, PERM labor certification must be filed well before your H-1B extensions become constrained. DOL processing currently runs over a year. Raise long-term sponsorship intent during your second year, not your fourth.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Identifying which KPMG offices and practice lines are actively sponsoring Consultant roles right now takes real data. Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring employers by role type and visa category, so you're targeting active opportunities rather than guessing from job postings alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does KPMG sponsor H-1B visas for Consultants?
Yes, KPMG sponsors H-1B visas for Consultant roles across its audit, tax, and advisory practices. The firm works with dedicated immigration counsel to manage petitions and has established internal processes for new hires requiring sponsorship. Because H-1B is subject to the annual lottery, KPMG typically initiates registration in March for roles starting the following October. Candidates on OPT should confirm their graduation date and OPT expiration align with this timeline before accepting an offer.
How do I apply for Consultant jobs at KPMG?
Most Consultant hires at KPMG come through campus recruiting programs, which open in late summer for the following year's cohort. Applications go through KPMG's careers portal, and candidates typically complete video interviews followed by a final-round office visit. If you're not on a target campus list, direct applications through the portal are accepted but face stiffer competition. Migrate Mate lists verified Consultant openings at KPMG filtered by visa sponsorship type, which helps you identify the right entry point.
Which visa types does KPMG commonly sponsor for Consultant roles?
KPMG sponsors H-1B visas for the broadest range of Consultant candidates and also supports E-3 visas for Australian nationals, which bypass the lottery entirely. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, KPMG has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process. The visa type offered depends on your citizenship, current status, and how far into your career you are when you join the firm.
What qualifications does KPMG expect for sponsored Consultant roles?
KPMG generally requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field for entry-level Consultant positions. CPA eligibility is expected for audit and tax tracks, and many offers are conditional on completing licensure within a set timeframe. For experienced Consultant hires, prior public accounting experience or relevant industry advisory work is standard. Sponsorship decisions are typically straightforward when your degree directly aligns with the practice line you're joining, which matters for H-1B specialty occupation classification.
How do I plan my timeline if KPMG is sponsoring my H-1B as a new Consultant?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're graduating in May and starting on OPT in June, you'll need your employer to register you the following March for an H-1B that kicks in the October after that. This means your OPT period needs to cover roughly 16 months before H-1B status activates. If your OPT runs out before October 1, STEM OPT extension can bridge the gap for eligible graduates, giving you up to 24 additional months of work authorization while your petition is pending.
