Strategic Account Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a strategic account manager in Virginia?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a technical field paired with progressive sales or account management experience. Virginia does not require a state-issued license for strategic account managers, so hiring decisions center on demonstrated results managing complex client relationships. Candidates who have sold to Virginia's dominant industries, particularly federal contracting, defense IT, and enterprise software, move through hiring processes faster than generalists.
How much do strategic account managers make in Virginia?
Strategic account managers in Virginia earn a median of about $72,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,700 for the lowest 10% to over $169,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire strategic account managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring strategic account managers in Virginia right now include Amazon Web Services, Paycom, and ColonialWebb, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Northern Virginia's dense concentration of federal contractors and technology firms makes it one of the most consistent markets in the region for this role year-round.
Which Virginia cities have the most strategic account manager jobs?
Arlington, McLean, and Herndon have the most strategic account manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia drives the volume through its concentration of defense contractors and federal IT firms headquartered in and around Tysons, McLean, and Reston, while Richmond pulls openings from financial services and healthcare, and Hampton Roads reflects demand from defense and logistics employers tied to its major military installations.
Are there remote strategic account manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 83% of strategic account manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how client-facing sales roles have shifted toward flexible arrangements. The portions of the role most likely to stay remote are internal reporting, pipeline management, and strategy planning, while enterprise deal negotiations and government client meetings tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a strategic account manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into an inside sales, sales development representative, or junior account executive role with a Virginia-based technology or defense contractor, then building toward strategic account work from there. Large employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, and SAIC run structured rotational and new graduate programs that place candidates into client-facing roles early. A Salesforce certification or experience supporting government proposals adds a measurable edge in Virginia's federal-heavy market.
Where can I find and apply to strategic account manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to strategic account manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across Northern Virginia, Richmond, Hampton Roads, and beyond. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit.
