Which energy companies in Ohio sponsor H-1B visas?
Several large Ohio-based energy employers have a documented history of H-1B visa sponsorship, including FirstEnergy, American Electric Power (AEP Ohio), Marathon Petroleum, and Columbia Gas of Ohio (now NiSource). Midstream and renewable energy firms operating in the state also file H-1B petitions. Sponsorship decisions are made case by case and are not guaranteed, but these larger employers have the infrastructure to support the process.
Which cities in Ohio have the most energy H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Cleveland and Columbus account for the largest share of energy H-1B roles in Ohio. Cleveland is home to FirstEnergy's headquarters and a concentration of utilities and engineering firms. Columbus hosts AEP Ohio's operations and a growing clean energy sector. Findlay, in northwest Ohio, is significant for petroleum and midstream roles given Marathon Petroleum's headquarters there. Toledo and Akron also see periodic openings in utility and infrastructure roles.
What types of energy roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Ohio?
H-1B sponsorship in Ohio's energy sector is most common for roles that require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. This includes electrical engineers, power systems engineers, environmental engineers, petroleum engineers, data scientists working on grid analytics, and GIS analysts supporting utility infrastructure. Roles in project management or operations may qualify if the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires a specialized degree.
How do I find energy H-1B sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers who need H-1B sponsorship, and you can filter directly by visa type, industry, and state to surface energy roles in Ohio. This saves significant time compared to manually researching which Ohio employers have a history of sponsoring. Migrate Mate aggregates roles from employers with documented H-1B filing activity, so you're not guessing which companies are open to sponsorship.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in the energy industry?
Ohio's energy sector is regulated at both the state and federal level, which affects hiring timelines. Utility companies in particular often have longer internal approval processes for new hires due to compliance requirements, which can affect how quickly an employer initiates H-1B paperwork. Ohio also has a notable mix of investor-owned utilities and municipal power systems, and smaller municipal utilities are far less likely to sponsor H-1B visas than large investor-owned companies like AEP or FirstEnergy.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B energy jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
