Which education employers in Tennessee sponsor H-1B visas?
Tennessee's most active H-1B visa sponsors in education include Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee (Knoxville and Memphis campuses), Tennessee State University, and Belmont University. Large public school districts such as Metro Nashville Public Schools and Shelby County Schools have also filed H-1B petitions, typically for specialized instructional or administrative roles that require a specific bachelor's degree or higher.
Which cities in Tennessee have the most education H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Nashville leads the state in education H-1B activity, driven by Vanderbilt University, Belmont, and one of the country's largest school districts. Knoxville follows, anchored by the University of Tennessee's flagship campus. Memphis is a third concentration point, with the University of Memphis and Shelby County Schools both filing petitions. Smaller university towns like Murfreesboro (Middle Tennessee State University) also see periodic activity.
What types of education roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Tennessee?
Roles that consistently qualify include tenured and tenure-track faculty positions, postdoctoral researchers, instructional designers, curriculum specialists, and education technology roles requiring a specialized degree. Positions in student affairs, general administration, or K-12 classroom teaching are less commonly sponsored because they may not meet the H-1B specialty occupation standard, which requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum entry requirement for the role.
How do I find education H-1B sponsorship jobs in Tennessee?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by state, visa type, and industry to surface education roles in Tennessee where employers have a documented history of H-1B sponsorship. This saves significant time compared to reviewing individual university career portals or district postings manually. Migrate Mate updates listings regularly, so checking back frequently improves your chances of catching new postings early.
Are there any Tennessee-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in education?
Tennessee's public universities are state institutions, which means their H-1B filings are subject to public records laws and are well-documented in DOL disclosure data. State budget cycles can affect hiring timelines at public schools and universities, so sponsored positions may open in concentrated periods around legislative appropriations. Private institutions like Vanderbilt have more hiring flexibility year-round. Cap-exempt status applies to most accredited universities, meaning they can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B education jobs in Tennessee?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
