Area Sales Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a area sales manager in Virginia?
Most area sales manager roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related field, though no state-issued license is required for the position itself. Virginia employers typically promote from within, so starting as a sales representative or account executive with a Virginia-based company and building a strong territory record is the most direct path. Industry-specific certifications, such as those in technology solutions or healthcare sales, meaningfully strengthen a candidacy in Virginia's dominant sectors.
How much do area sales managers make in Virginia?
Area sales managers in Virginia earn a median of about $191,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $94,710 for the lowest 10% to over $302,900 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire area sales managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring area sales managers in Virginia right now include Quality Conveyor Solutions, B. F. Saul Hospitality, and Enhabit Home Health & Hospice, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense, technology, and healthcare distribution firms means demand for area sales managers with federal or regulated-industry experience is particularly consistent across the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most area sales manager jobs?
Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Roanoke have the most area sales manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's density of federal contractors and enterprise technology firms drives the largest share of postings, while Richmond's headquarters for healthcare distributors and financial services companies generates strong regional demand, and Virginia Beach's mix of defense, retail, and healthcare employers adds meaningful volume in the coastal market.
Are there remote area sales manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're relatively limited, since area sales managers are typically expected to maintain in-person relationships within a defined Virginia territory. About 25% of area sales manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting that the role requires regular field presence. The functions most amenable to remote work are pipeline reporting, virtual client check-ins, and internal team coaching, while prospecting and account visits remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a area sales manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a sales development representative or account executive at a Virginia-based technology, healthcare, or federal contracting firm and building measurable territory results over two to three years. Large Virginia employers such as Leidos and Cardinal Health run structured sales associate and rotational programs that develop candidates into management roles. Completing a recognized sales certification and demonstrating CRM proficiency gives candidates without direct management experience a concrete edge in Virginia's competitive market.
