There is no state-issued license required to work in this role in New York. Earning a Certified Professional in Supply Management or Certified Purchasing Professional designation strengthens your candidacy, particularly for roles at large healthcare systems, financial firms, and public-sector agencies across the state.
How much do purchasing specialists make in New York?
Purchasing specialists in New York earn a median of about $54,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $40,630 for the lowest 10% to over $74,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire purchasing specialists in New York?

New York's concentration of major hospital networks, financial institutions, and public universities means procurement roles appear consistently across both the private and public sectors.
Which New York cities have the most purchasing specialist jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Rochester have the most purchasing specialist openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution, driven by its dense cluster of financial services firms, healthcare systems, and corporate headquarters, while Buffalo and Albany draw significant demand from regional manufacturers, state government agencies, and anchor universities.
Are there remote purchasing specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many operational roles, since purchasing specialist work centers on communication, analysis, and system-based transactions that transfer well to remote settings. About 17% of purchasing specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote-friendly share concentrated in vendor management, contract administration, and procurement analyst functions rather than warehouse or inventory-facing positions.
How can I get hired as a purchasing specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a purchasing coordinator or procurement assistant role, which large New York employers such as hospital systems, state agencies, and universities use to bring in candidates without full buyer experience. Lateral moves from accounts payable, inventory control, or operations support are common entry points. Completing a Certified Professional in Supply Management exam or building an ERP system proficiency, such as SAP or Oracle, gives candidates a measurable edge when applying to New York's public institutions and healthcare networks.
