Technical Sales Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical sales engineer in California?
Most technical sales engineers in California start with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Unlike nursing or contracting, the role carries no California state license requirement. Employers typically want candidates who can demonstrate technical depth through project work, internships, or a prior engineering role, and many Bay Area and San Diego companies recruit directly from UC and Cal State engineering programs.
How much do technical sales engineers make in California?
Technical sales engineers in California earn a median of about $139,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,850 for the lowest 10% to over $213,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical sales engineers in California?
Employers hiring technical sales engineers in California right now include NVIDIA, Google, and World Wide Technology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor, enterprise software, and industrial automation companies means hiring is consistent across both established technology giants and growth-stage hardware and SaaS firms headquartered in the state.
Which California cities have the most technical sales engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most technical sales engineer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because it is home to the largest concentration of semiconductor, cloud, and enterprise software headquarters in the country, while San Diego's defense electronics and life sciences sectors and Los Angeles's aerospace and industrial automation base drive steady demand in those metros.
Are there remote technical sales engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles because technical sales engineers often need to run on-site demos, visit customer labs, or support proof-of-concept installations in person. About 37% of technical sales engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the remote share is highest for software and SaaS-focused roles where product evaluations happen entirely in cloud environments.
How can I get hired as a technical sales engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from an applications engineering, field support, or systems engineering role at a California hardware or software company. Large Bay Area employers like Cisco and Broadcom, and San Diego semiconductor firms, regularly bring on associate sales engineers directly from new-grad engineering pools. Building a portfolio of technical presentations, completing vendor-specific certifications in areas like cloud architecture or power systems, and targeting inside technical sales roles as a stepping stone all accelerate the transition.
Where can I find and apply to technical sales engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to technical sales engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across sectors including semiconductor, enterprise software, industrial automation, and clean energy.
