Which energy companies in Minnesota sponsor H-1B visas?
Xcel Energy, headquartered in Minneapolis, is among the most active H-1B sponsors in Minnesota's energy sector, with filings across engineering, grid operations, and data analytics roles. Minnesota Power (ALLETE) in Duluth and Great Plains Energy Incorporated also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data. Independent power producers, renewable energy developers, and energy consulting firms operating in the state also sponsor H-1B workers, though at lower volumes than the major utilities.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most energy H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The Twin Cities metro area, particularly Minneapolis and its suburbs, concentrates the majority of energy H-1B sponsorship activity due to corporate headquarters, regional utility offices, and energy consulting firms based there. Duluth is a secondary hub, home to Minnesota Power and ALLETE's operations. Rochester sees some energy-adjacent hiring tied to large commercial and industrial energy management projects. Rural areas across the state host wind and solar project sites but typically require workers to be based at metro offices.
What types of energy roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Minnesota?
Roles that qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules generally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. In Minnesota's energy sector, this includes electrical engineers, power systems engineers, energy analysts, environmental engineers, control systems engineers, and software developers working on grid or energy management platforms. Project managers with engineering credentials and GIS analysts supporting transmission planning also appear regularly in H-1B filings for energy employers in the state.
How do I find energy H-1B sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters energy roles in Minnesota by H-1B sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers who have actually filed petitions rather than guessing. Search by the Energy category and select Minnesota to see current openings. Beyond Migrate Mate, reviewing Department of Labor LCA disclosure data can confirm which specific Minnesota employers have sponsored H-1B workers in energy roles recently, which helps you prioritize applications.
Are there any Minnesota-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in the energy sector?
Minnesota has a strong renewable energy mandate under its state clean energy standard, which drives ongoing hiring at wind, solar, and storage developers, many of whom sponsor H-1B workers for engineering and project development roles. The state's regulated utility environment means Xcel Energy and Minnesota Power must file rate cases with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, creating demand for regulatory affairs professionals, though sponsorship for those roles depends on degree requirements being met. Cold-weather infrastructure and grid reliability work also generates consistent engineering hiring.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B energy jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
