Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in New York?
Large general contractors and engineering firms account for most H-1B visa sponsorships in New York construction. Companies like Turner Construction, AECOM, Skanska, Lendlease, and WSP regularly file H-1B petitions for specialized roles. Larger firms with dedicated HR and legal teams are far more likely to sponsor than smaller regional contractors, making them the primary targets for H-1B job seekers in this industry.
Which cities in New York have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the vast majority of construction H-1B sponsorship activity in the state, driven by its scale of commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects. Buffalo is a secondary market seeing growth through the Buffalo Billion initiative and semiconductor-related construction. Albany and White Plains also see periodic demand, particularly for civil and infrastructure engineering roles tied to state-funded projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B visas require the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. In construction, roles that commonly meet this threshold include structural engineers, civil engineers, construction project managers with engineering degrees, cost estimators with technical credentials, and building information modeling (BIM) specialists. General site superintendent or laborer roles typically do not qualify.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking H-1B sponsorship and filters construction jobs in New York by visa type, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. You can search by role, location, and industry to surface firms that have an active sponsorship history in construction. Focusing on larger general contractors and engineering consultancies in New York City will give you the strongest pool of opportunities.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in construction?
New York City's prevailing wage requirements under local labor law add a layer of compliance for H-1B employers beyond federal Labor Condition Application obligations, which can influence which roles employers choose to sponsor. New York State also has active public infrastructure programs that generate engineering and project management demand, but publicly funded projects often carry additional wage and reporting requirements that affect how employers structure sponsored positions.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
