Tips for Finding H-1B Sponsorship Jobs in New York
Target Finance and Banking Employers First
New York's financial sector, anchored by firms on Wall Street and Midtown Manhattan, files among the highest H-1B petition volumes in the state. Roles in quantitative analysis, risk management, and financial engineering consistently attract sponsorship from large banks and asset managers.
Look Beyond New York City
Albany hosts state government contractors and healthcare systems that sponsor H-1B workers, while Buffalo has a growing tech and manufacturing base. Exploring opportunities outside NYC often means less competition for sponsored roles at employers who recruit nationally.
Use a Sponsorship-Focused Job Board
Filtering for sponsorship-confirmed employers saves significant time. Migrate Mate lists H-1B sponsorship jobs in New York by industry, so you can browse roles from employers with a documented history of sponsoring petitions rather than applying speculatively.
Prioritize Large Employers with Dedicated Immigration Programs
New York's largest employers, particularly in tech, consulting, and pharmaceuticals, have in-house immigration teams that process H-1B petitions routinely. These organizations are more likely to have established workflows for sponsoring new hires than smaller companies navigating the process for the first time.
Align Your Application Timing with the H-1B Cap Cycle
USCIS opens H-1B registrations in March each year for an October 1 start date. New York employers familiar with the cap cycle will expect cap-subject candidates to be aware of this timeline, so discussing it proactively in interviews signals preparedness.
Focus on Specialty Occupation Roles with Clear Degree Requirements
H-1B eligibility depends on the role qualifying as a specialty occupation, meaning a specific bachelor's degree or higher is required. In New York, roles in software engineering, data science, accounting, and clinical research consistently meet this standard and attract active sponsorship.

What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
