ExxonMobil and BP maintain significant sponsored workforces in the state, and firms like PSEG Long Island and Consolidated Edison subsidiaries also appear regularly in DOL Labor Condition Application filings for energy positions.
Which cities in New York have the most energy H-1B sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share of energy H-1B sponsorship activity in the state, driven by utility headquarters, energy trading firms, and clean energy consultancies concentrated in Manhattan. Albany sees consistent demand tied to state energy agencies and grid operators. The Hudson Valley and Long Island corridors also have notable activity, particularly around utility infrastructure and offshore wind development projects.
What types of energy roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in New York?
Roles that qualify as specialty occupations under the H-1B standard typically require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. In New York's energy sector, this commonly includes electrical engineers, power systems engineers, energy analysts, environmental engineers, software developers supporting grid technology, and energy policy specialists. Positions in offshore wind project development have grown significantly given New York's aggressive renewable energy targets.

Are there any New York-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in the energy sector?
New York's Clean Energy Standard and the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act have driven substantial hiring in renewable energy, which has expanded the pool of employers filing H-1B petitions in the state. Energy employers subject to New York Public Service Commission oversight may have additional compliance layers that affect hiring timelines. Prevailing wage requirements under H-1B rules apply statewide, with New York City wages benchmarked at a higher level than upstate positions.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B energy jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
