Business Development Lead Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business development lead in California?
Most business development leads in California come up through sales, account management, or marketing roles and move into business development once they have demonstrated pipeline ownership and deal-closing experience. No state-issued license is required, but California employers in regulated industries such as life sciences or financial services often expect relevant industry certifications or sector-specific knowledge. A bachelor's degree in business or a related field is the standard baseline, and experience with enterprise sales cycles is typically expected before stepping into a lead role.
How much do business development leads make in California?
Business development leads in California earn a median of about $81,140 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $51,200 for the lowest 10% to over $155,150 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business development leads in California?
Employers hiring business development leads in California right now include BKF Engineers, Google, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, biotech firms, and enterprise software companies makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for this role.
Which California cities have the most business development lead jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most business development lead openings in California. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area drive volume through its density of SaaS and enterprise technology headquarters, Los Angeles attracts openings across media, entertainment tech, and professional services, and San Diego's strong life sciences and defense sectors sustain consistent demand for business development talent.
Are there remote business development lead jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 28% of business development lead openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role centers on calls, virtual demos, and digital relationship management rather than on-site presence. The portions of the job most likely to remain fully remote are inbound pipeline development, partner communications, and market research.
How can I get hired as a business development lead in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a sales development representative or account executive role, both of which are widely available at California technology and SaaS companies that run structured associate programs, including those at large Bay Area employers. Demonstrating a track of outbound outreach, pipeline contribution, or partner coordination gives candidates a concrete foundation. A portfolio showing market research, competitive analysis, or a documented deal process can differentiate applicants without formal lead-level titles on their resume.
Where can I find and apply to business development lead jobs in California?
You can find and apply to business development lead jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and target market, and apply directly to the ones that match.
