California employers in SaaS, cloud, and life sciences generally require a bachelor's degree and several years of quota-carrying experience. Earning a Certified Sales Leadership Professional designation or completing sales management training through recognized programs strengthens a candidacy, particularly at larger California technology companies.
How much do enterprise sales directors make in California?
Enterprise sales directors in California earn a median of about $134,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $300,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire enterprise sales directors in California?

California's concentration of enterprise software headquarters, cloud providers, and medtech companies means consistent demand across both established names and well-funded growth-stage firms.
Which California cities have the most enterprise sales director jobs?
San Francisco, San Ramon, and Oakland account for the largest share of enterprise sales director openings in California, driven by the dense clusters of technology headquarters and enterprise software companies in the Bay Area, the media, entertainment, and financial services industries drawing enterprise sellers to Los Angeles, and San Diego's strength in cybersecurity, defense technology, and life sciences creating steady demand for directors who sell to complex enterprise buyers.

About 70% of enterprise sales director openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves virtual executive meetings, video-based demos, and distributed team management. Strategic account planning, pipeline reviews, and internal leadership responsibilities are the parts of the role most often performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as an enterprise sales director in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a director role from a high-performing senior account executive or sales manager position at a California employer. Large California technology companies such as those headquartered in Silicon Valley and San Diego frequently promote from within or consider candidates who can show a consistent quota achievement record in a team-carrying role. Building experience managing a small pod of account executives, even informally, and gaining exposure to enterprise procurement cycles through named account selling positions candidates well for a first director title.
