Tips for Your Occupational Therapist Job Search
Tailor your resume to each setting
An OT resume for a pediatric outpatient clinic reads differently than one for an acute care hospital. Swap in setting-specific language around patient population, documentation systems like Epic or PointClickCare, and outcome measures relevant to that practice area.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists occupational therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight specialty certifications prominently
Credentials like CHT, SIPT, or BCPR set you apart immediately. List them after your OTR/L in your header, not buried in a certifications section, so hiring managers spot them before reading your experience.
Filter openings by practice setting first
Job title alone won't tell you enough. Before applying, identify which settings match your clinical background, whether school-based, skilled nursing, home health, or acute care, and prioritize listings that name those environments explicitly in the description.
Prepare for a clinical reasoning interview
Most OT interviews include at least one patient scenario question. Practice walking through your evaluation process, goal-setting rationale, and discharge planning out loud, using specific examples from your clinical fieldwork or current caseload.
Negotiate start dates around state licensure
If you're waiting on state licensure by endorsement, clarify your expected approval timeline in writing before accepting an offer. Many employers will hold a position for a licensed candidate rather than restart a search, but only if you raise it proactively.
Occupational Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most occupational therapists?
The companies hiring the most occupational therapists right now include Ivyrehab Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy & Speech-Language Pathology, Pllc, FOX Rehabilitation, and Optum, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong across inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and school-based settings.
How many occupational therapist jobs are remote?
About 1% of occupational therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical roles. Telehealth positions are most common in mental health occupational therapy, early intervention coaching, and care coordination roles where direct physical assessment is not required.
How do you become an occupational therapist?
You earn a master's or doctoral degree in occupational therapy from an ACOTE-accredited program, which includes supervised fieldwork rotations. After graduating, you pass the NBCOT certification exam to earn the OTR credential, then apply for licensure in the state where you plan to practice. Each state sets its own licensure requirements, so confirm those before applying for jobs.
Can you get hired as an occupational therapist with no experience?
Yes, many employers hire new graduates specifically for entry-level OT roles, particularly in skilled nursing facilities, school districts, and home health agencies that have established mentorship structures. Your Level II fieldwork placements are your primary experience, so highlight the patient populations, documentation systems, and intervention approaches you used during those rotations on your resume and in interviews.
What does the occupational therapist interview process look like?
Most OT interviews begin with a phone or video screen with a recruiter or HR contact, followed by a clinical interview with a supervising OT or department manager. That second stage typically includes patient scenario questions, questions about your documentation practices, and a discussion of how you handle caseload management. Some settings, particularly schools and pediatric clinics, may also ask you to complete a brief skills demonstration or observation.
Where can I find and apply to occupational therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to occupational therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles by location, setting, or specialization, find the ones that fit your background, and apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
