Tips for Your Office Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to office size
A 10-person office and a 500-person headquarters expect very different things from an office manager. Spell out exactly how many staff you supported, which vendors you managed, and whether you handled a budget independently. That context separates your resume from generic applications fast.
Certify your software proficiency now
Most listings specify tools like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or specific scheduling and accounting platforms. If you're strong in those tools but have no credential to show it, a free or low-cost certification closes that gap before a recruiter even reads your resume.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists office manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by industry first
Office manager duties shift significantly between a law firm, a medical practice, and a tech startup. Search by industry before you search by title so your cover letter can reference the specific compliance, scheduling, or operational norms that actually matter in that environment.
Prepare scenario answers for culture questions
Interviewers almost always ask how you've handled a difficult vendor, a last-minute facilities crisis, or a conflict between staff members. Write out two or three real examples in advance, with a clear outcome, so you're not reconstructing them under pressure on the call.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate pay
Once you have an offer, ask the hiring manager to confirm which functions fall under your role: HR onboarding, IT coordination, accounts payable, event planning. The answer affects your workload and your leverage for future title changes, so it's worth getting explicit before you accept.
Office Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most office managers?
The companies hiring the most office managers right now include Dollar General, Aspen Dental, and Dollar Tree, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, law firms, and commercial real estate companies consistently maintain steady demand for the role.
How many office manager jobs are remote?
About 6% of office manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though the role skews more on-site than most administrative positions. Sub-functions like vendor coordination and facilities oversight almost always require a physical presence, while billing support, scheduling, and HR coordination are the areas most likely to allow remote flexibility.
How do you become an office manager?
Start by building two to three years of administrative or operations experience in any professional setting, with clear ownership of tasks like scheduling, correspondence, and vendor contact. Develop proficiency in the productivity and communication tools common in your target industry. Move into a lead or senior admin role that involves coordinating others or managing a small budget, then apply to office manager positions once you can point to concrete outcomes you owned rather than supported.
Can you get hired as an office manager with little experience?
Yes, especially at smaller companies where the role is newly created and expectations are shaped around the candidate. Emphasize any experience where you took initiative without being asked, such as organizing a process that previously had none, onboarding a new hire informally, or managing a recurring event. Offices with under twenty staff often prioritize reliability and problem-solving attitude over a formal management title in your history.
What does the office manager interview process look like?
Most office manager interviews run two to three rounds. The first is typically a phone or video screen with HR or a recruiter to confirm your background and availability. The second is a working interview or structured conversation with the hiring manager that focuses on how you've handled operational problems, difficult personalities, or competing priorities. Some employers add a practical component, such as reviewing a sample schedule or walking through how you'd set up a new vendor account.
Where can I find and apply to office manager jobs?
You can find and apply to office manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and industry preference, then apply directly to each one that fits.
