How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Field Engineer
Target oil and gas service companies with global workforces
Schlumberger (SLB), Halliburton, and Baker Hughes employ field engineers across the U.S. and have established visa sponsorship processes. These companies regularly hire internationally trained engineers for roles involving well site operations, drilling support, and production optimization.
Be prepared for remote and rotating work schedules
Many field engineering roles require extended time at well sites, construction projects, or remote telecom installations. H-1B holders should confirm that all intended work locations are properly covered, especially if you rotate between multiple states or regions.
Leverage STEM OPT to build field experience
Petroleum, electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Field engineering roles reward hands-on experience, and the 36-month OPT window gives you time to develop the practical skills that classroom training alone cannot provide.
Consider telecom and data center field engineering roles
Companies like Ericsson, Nokia, and major data center operators (Equinix, Digital Realty) hire field engineers for network deployment and infrastructure maintenance. The 5G buildout and rapid data center expansion across the U.S. have increased demand in these areas.
Highlight safety certifications and training
OSHA 30-Hour and H2S Alive certifications demonstrate your readiness for field environments. Employers value candidates who can start work immediately at regulated sites without additional safety training delays, which also strengthens your candidacy for sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can field engineers get H-1B sponsorship for jobs that require travel?
Yes. H-1B holders can perform work-related travel throughout the U.S. The employer must list all intended work locations on the Labor Condition Application, or file amendments if the worksite changes significantly. Companies like Schlumberger (SLB) and Halliburton routinely manage multi-location H-1B filings for their field engineering workforce.
What industries hire the most field engineers with visa sponsorship?
Oil and gas services, telecommunications, construction, and data center infrastructure are the primary industries. Oilfield service companies have a long history of sponsoring international engineers. Telecom companies have increased sponsorship for field engineers involved in 5G deployment, and large construction firms also sponsor for field roles on major infrastructure projects.
Do field engineering roles qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B?
Yes, provided the role requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field. Field engineers who perform technical analysis, system commissioning, or equipment troubleshooting based on engineering principles typically meet the specialty occupation criteria. Roles that are primarily manual or supervisory without an engineering degree requirement may face more scrutiny.
Is the pay for field engineering roles competitive enough for H-1B prevailing wage requirements?
Field engineering roles typically meet or exceed H-1B prevailing wage requirements, especially in oil and gas, where compensation often includes base salary plus per diem, overtime, and rotation bonuses. Telecom and data center field roles also tend to offer competitive salaries that generally satisfy prevailing wage levels. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search tool.
