Target employers with H-1B filing history
Large enterprises and managed service providers file H-1B petitions far more often than small IT shops. Focusing your search on companies with a documented sponsorship track record cuts wasted applications and increases your odds significantly.
Clarify your degree field early
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field for specialty occupation status. Computer science, information technology, and management information systems are the strongest fits. A general business degree without an IT concentration can create complications.
Canadian and Mexican applicants should consider TN status
TN visas are available at the border without a lottery and cover systems analysts and computer roles broadly. If you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, TN sponsorship is faster and cheaper than H-1B for most IT support positions.
Ask about premium processing upfront
Standard H-1B adjudication can take three to five months. Premium processing gets a decision in 15 business days for an additional fee. Confirm early whether your prospective employer is willing to pay for it before accepting an offer.
Document your technical specialization clearly
Generic IT support titles face more USCIS scrutiny than specialized roles. Frame your experience around specific systems, platforms, or environments you support. Employers should reflect this specialization in the job description submitted with the H-1B petition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsorship-ready employers
Not every IT Technical Support listing comes with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters exclusively for roles where employers have confirmed willingness to sponsor, saving you time spent chasing positions that will never move forward for international candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IT Technical Support qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that a bachelor's degree in a specific field be a normal minimum requirement for the position. Generic helpdesk roles often fail this test, while roles supporting complex enterprise systems, cloud infrastructure, or cybersecurity platforms have a stronger case. The job description the employer submits is critical.
Which visa types commonly sponsor IT Technical Support workers?
H-1B visa is the most common path for Indian, Nigerian, and other non-treaty nationals. Canadian and Mexican citizens often use TN visa status under the systems analyst or computer systems analyst category, which can be obtained at the border without a lottery. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa. L-1 visa transfers are an option if you're moving within a multinational company.
Do I need a four-year bachelor's degree, or will an associate's degree work?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS expects at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. An associate's degree alone is generally not sufficient, though three years of relevant work experience can substitute for one year of education under certain calculations. A two-year degree plus six or more years of specialized IT experience may bridge the gap, but approval is not guaranteed.
How do I find IT Technical Support jobs that actually offer visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards mix sponsored and non-sponsored listings without clear labeling, which means significant time spent on applications that go nowhere. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on roles where employers have confirmed sponsorship willingness, so every IT Technical Support listing you see is relevant to your situation as an international candidate.
What H-1B approval rates look like for IT Technical Support petitions?
Approval rates vary based on how the role is categorized and how the employer documents the specialty occupation requirement. Roles framed around generic support functions face higher denial rates than those tied to specific technical environments. Employers with experienced immigration counsel and a strong history of H-1B approvals in IT roles tend to have significantly better outcomes than first-time petitioners.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored IT Technical Support jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
