How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Tax Consultant
Target Big Four and national firms first
Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG have established immigration programs and sponsor tax consultants at scale. They handle the LCA and I-129 process in-house, which means fewer delays and more predictable timelines than smaller firms.
Confirm your degree field matches the role
H-1B specialty occupation requires a degree in a directly related field. Accounting, finance, taxation, and economics typically satisfy this. A general business degree may require additional documentation to establish the theoretical and practical application to tax work.
Ask about E-3 if you hold Australian citizenship
Australian citizens can apply for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and processes in weeks through consular interview. Tax consulting qualifies as a specialty occupation under E-3, making it one of the most straightforward paths to U.S. work authorization for Australians.
Get your CPA or EA credential before you apply
A CPA license or IRS Enrolled Agent designation strengthens your specialty occupation case significantly. It demonstrates the theoretical and practical depth the role requires, and employers view credentialed candidates as lower-risk sponsorship investments.
Understand the H-1B lottery timeline before accepting offers
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you miss the lottery cycle, you may wait up to 18 months to begin work. Plan offer timing around this window or ask employers about cap-exempt alternatives.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every accounting firm sponsors visas, and screening employers manually is time-consuming. Migrate Mate filters job listings to show only roles from employers with a verified sponsorship history, so you focus your applications where they are most likely to succeed.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a tax consultant role qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes. Tax consulting qualifies as a specialty occupation because it typically requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, taxation, or a closely related field. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for tax consultant roles consistently, particularly when the job description specifies the degree requirement rather than treating any bachelor's degree as sufficient.
Which employers sponsor tax consultants most often?
The Big Four accounting firms, Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG, are among the most active sponsors for tax consultant roles. Regional firms such as RSM, Grant Thornton, and BDO also sponsor regularly. Corporate tax departments at large multinationals are another common source of sponsorship. You can search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate to narrow your list.
Can I get a tax consultant job sponsored on an E-3 visa instead of H-1B?
If you hold Australian citizenship, yes. The E-3 visa covers specialty occupations, and tax consulting qualifies. Unlike the H-1B, the E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap that causes practical shortages. You apply through a U.S. consulate in Australia after your employer files a Labor Condition Application, and most applicants receive their visa within two to four weeks of the interview.
What degree do I need for a tax consultant visa sponsorship application to succeed?
A bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, finance, or economics is the standard baseline. Some employers also accept degrees in business with a concentration in accounting, provided the coursework is documented. A CPA license or master's in taxation can substitute for or supplement an undergraduate degree that doesn't align perfectly with the specific tax role being sponsored.
How does the H-1B lottery affect tax consultant job offers?
Tax consultant roles at cap-subject employers are subject to the H-1B lottery, which runs in March each year. Selection is not guaranteed, and unsuccessful applicants must wait for the next cycle. Some employers, including universities and certain nonprofits, are cap-exempt and can file year-round. If you're on OPT, your employer may be able to file during a future lottery while you continue working.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Tax Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
